1. Alibaba, Google, and OpenAI all drop new models targeting speed, size, and tone: Alibaba kicked off the wave with the Qwen 3.5 Small series, a family of open-source models built to run AI directly on devices — even without an internet connection. We also got Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite, the cheapest and fastest Gemini 3 series model yet, capable of outperforming 2.5 Flash with faster performance at a cheaper price. Finally, OpenAI released GPT-5.3 Instant, a model it describes as "more accurate, less cringe” that delivers answers without unnecessary preambles. All three are rolling out now.

2. Spectre I is a new portable device that stops your phone, laptop, and smart speakers from listening to your conversations: Deveillance, a new startup focused on consumer privacy, just launched Spectre I — a portable device that emits signals that overlay with your speech and cloak it from all microphones within a 2-meter radius to help ensure privacy. The device’s signals are inaudible to humans and run completely on-device with no cloud processing. Spectre I is available for pre-order now with shipping expected in August 2026. The release video has already racked up 1M views. Watch it in action here.

3. Chronicle turns raw notes into polished, on-brand presentations: Chronicle is an AI-powered storytelling startup that recently released Muse, an agent that handles research, copywriting, layout, and iteration to create beautiful presentations. The platform includes 200+ templates, lets you embed common tools directly into slides, and exports to PPT, PDF, or a shareable web link with built-in viewer analytics. See how it works here.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Venture funding hit $189B in February — up 780% from last year

Setting records. Global venture capital funding hit $189B in February, the largest month ever recorded — and a 780% increase over February 2025. It was an unprecedented month that this chart really puts into perspective. But the real story isn’t just the record funding. It’s where that money went.

Consolidated capital. Just three companies raked in 83% of all funding last month: OpenAI, Anthropic, and Waymo. OpenAI's latest round (a $110B round backed by SoftBank, Nvidia, and Amazon) would’ve been enough to set the monthly funding record by itself. We’ve grown accustomed to AI firms raising billions — but OpenAI is in a league of its own.

The public/private split. The euphoria in the private markets is in stark contrast to the stock market — which saw software stocks shed roughly $1T in early February after a wave of Anthropic product releases spooked investors. The bleeding only slowed when Anthropic announced several partnerships and eased concerns of AI replacing software entirely.

Both markets will collide soon. OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly exploring IPOs this year, either of which would rank among the largest offerings in history. But going public also means opening their books for the first time — and publicly justifying their sky-high valuations.
