A viral AI-generated essay has everyone worried about what to do with their lives and careers

"The future is already here. It just hasn't knocked on your door yet." Matt Shumer, CEO of startup OthersideAI, just published a long-form essay that’s blown up on social media. High-profile accounts with millions of followers are sharing the post, which claims that AI progress has moved far beyond what most people realize, and the gap between public perception and current reality is enormous.

The calm before the storm: Shumer claims his AI tools now build complete apps from simple English prompts, then autonomously test and refine them without human intervention. He projects that AI will likely disrupt 50% of entry-level, white-collar jobs in one to five years. Multiple outlets are backing up Shumer’s argument, while some users are sounding the alarm over suspicious patterns in the industry.

But some skeptics are pushing back. Mashable's Timothy Beck points out the industry has cried wolf multiple times, making it "hard to take dire warnings like this too seriously." For Wharton professor Ethan Mollick, it’s important to note that AI is still "quite jagged", creating bottlenecks for users.
