1. SSI CEO jumps ship to Meta: Another day, another big fish joins Meta AI. Safe Superintelligence co-founder and CEO Daniel Gross is the latest in a wave of AI heavyweights to join the social media giant’s all-star superintelligence lab, leaving fellow co-founder Ilya Sutskever to take charge as CEO. Gross joins his investing partner and ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman in his new role.

2. US plans to shut the door on suspected chip smuggling to China: The Trump administration is taking aim at Malaysia and Thailand in its cat-and-mouse game of keeping America's prized AI chips out of Beijing’s hands. Suspecting the countries of acting as backdoor routes for smuggling advanced semiconductors into China, the White House is planning to scrap parts of Biden’s global “AI diffusion rule”, enforcing new curbs in order to restrict further AI chip shipments to Southeast Asia.

3. Cursor in damage control after users rage over new pricing model: Users of the popular vibe-coding tool went scorched earth after what they deemed a "rug pull" on its pricing model. Developers woke up on July 4th to discover their supposedly "unlimited" Pro subscriptions were burning through usage quotas at warp speed, with some exhausting their monthly allowance in just days. The company has since admitted that it "missed the mark" and offered refunds, but many users remain unconvinced.

AI is crossing the uncanny valley, and there’s no telling the difference anymore

Seeing is believing. Or at least it used to be. The most recent wave of AI video and audio models is pushing past the uncanny valley — a concept that refers to the eerie, unsettling feeling we get when we come across AI-generated content on the internet. Content that looks almost (but not quite) human-made.

For the past couple of years, the uncanny valley has acted as a built-in smoke alarm for us to spot AI-made content. Remember the Will Smith spaghetti video? Those days are officially over.

Here are just a few examples of viral AI videos going undetected in recent months:

• The “Emotional Support Kangaroo” clip that’s racked up more than 17M views on TikTok is completely AI-generated.

• Varun Mayya's Instagram following has swelled past 1M followers, and almost all of his videos are generated with AI video and audio models.

• A new Instagram account called StormtrooperVlogs garnered 200K followers in under a week using the Veo 3 video model.

What's happening is both fascinating and alarming. The traditional tells of something being AI-generated — an extra toe, unnatural lighting, dead-eyed stares, awkward speech patterns — have all but disappeared. The old rules simply don’t apply anymore, and it’s getting increasingly hard to tell what’s real and what’s not on the internet.

The same tech that’s democratizing Hollywood-level content creation and revolutionizing the creator economy also has the potential to enable deception at an unprecedented scale. The challenge now is to develop a new generation of tools and rules of thumb to navigate this new reality.
