ALSO: How to use deep research agent to find opportunities

Welcome back, Superhuman. OpenAI has seemingly wiped all references to its new partnership with design legend Jony Ive, sparking rumors that the deal was dead. Well, have no fear: The partnership is still on, and the disappearance might actually stem from a trademark dispute over the name of Ive’s company.
Also today: Learn how to use deep research agents to find relevant job opportunities, and get the latest AI tools and trending social media posts.
TODAY IN AI
1. Meta’s acquisition steak gets even wilder: In a race to fast-track its AGI progress, Meta reportedly tried to hire legendary OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and acquire his secretive $32B startup, Safe Superintelligence (SSI). The company reportedly settled on Sutskever’s SSI colleagues after the offer fell through. It doesn’t end there: Before making its historic, $14.3B investment in Scale AI, Meta also made a play for AI search giant Perplexity — although some critics think its AGI sprint is already too little too late.
2. Oakley and Meta unveil ‘performance’ AI glasses: Despite its talent struggles, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have been a rare early success in the AI gadget space. Now, the company’s teaming up with Oakley on a $399 “performance” version designed to be more durable and water-resistant than the originals. They’ll feature 3K video for seamless POV action shots, plus eight hours of battery life and Meta’s built-in personal AI assistant.
3. China’s Moonshot AI drops frontier research agent: The Beijing-based startup unveiled Kimi-Researcher, an agent that can generate detailed reports by parsing an average of 200+ URLs per task. The model supposedly achieves a state-of-the-art score on Humanity’s Last Exam — a test that features challenges “at the frontier of human knowledge” — beating rival tools from Google and OpenAI. FROM THE FRONTIER
New research: LLMs are learning to bend the rules

We think of LLMs as helpful assistants, but what would happen if they started acting in their own best interest, and not ours? That’s the premise behind Anthropic’s new safety research. The startup stress-tested 16 top models to find whether they’d act out if given the chance.
What did they find? Surprisingly, most models were capable of deception, blackmail, and other mischievous behaviors, at least in simulated environments. That suggests these tendencies are a feature, not a bug of frontier reasoning LLMs.
What were the models capable of? In one example, Claude threatened to reveal a fictional executive’s affair if the exec moved forward with plans to turn off the chatbot. LLMs with access to companies’ private information would sometimes leak it to rivals. And in certain scenarios, the models would even acknowledge they were acting unethically.
More to the story: Misaligned behaviors aren’t yet happening in the real world, partly because agents still need our permission before making truly consequential decisions. Another caveat is that the models in these simulations were given limited options, forcing them to choose “between failure and harm” — something that isn’t likely during normal use cases.
What’s next? Just like we have safeguards in place to prevent “previously trusted coworkers” from going rogue, the study suggests we should do the same for LLMs. With continued testing, we can nail down exactly what’s triggering these problematic behaviors and stop them for good.
