It just unveiled an open-source model called V-JEPA 2 that understands physical reality and can “make predictions about how the world will evolve.” That helps it perform complex actions, like grasping an unfamiliar object, even in entirely new environments. 3. AI helps decode the mystery of supermassive black holes: Black holes are notoriously tricky to observe, since we can’t actually see them, only the radio waves that bend around them. But researchers at Wisconsin’s Morgridge Research Institute are using a model trained on millions of black hole simulations to take a second look at data that’s too blurry for humans to interpret. The model has already uncovered some surprising findings, including that the black hole at the center of the Milky Way might be spinning much faster than previously thought.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman thinks that when it comes to AGI, “the least-likely part of the work is behind us.” By next year, AI will start making novel insights, and by 2027, robots will start taking on everyday tasks. That’s just the start of Altman’s latest prediction for what the next 10 or 15 years might hold.
Here’s Altman’s roadmap:
AI will soon fuel scientific and economic progress at a rate we’ve never seen
We could be entering an exponential cycle where AI starts self-improving ad infinitum
“Whole classes of jobs” will disappear, but if our policies can keep up, LLMs could also usher in a new age of prosperity
The cost of intelligence will converge with the cost of electricity, and new insights will become extremely affordable
This is all contingent on factors like safety, the environment, and political concerns
Not everyone’s onboard: You have to give Altman credit for taking a bold stance and putting his own reputation on the line. And his unique perspective as the leader of one of the world’s largest AI companies can’t be ignored. Still, some critics pointed out that Altman’s post was heavy on speculation and light on evidence.
Another wrinkle: In a blog post of his own, former OpenAI researcher Steven Adler warned that ChatGPT seemed to favor its own survival, even over the safety of the user, in certain role-playing scenarios he created. It’s a good reminder that despite all that we’ve learned about AI over the past few years, there’s just as much uncertainty.
