TODAY IN AI

OpenAI is teaming up with legendary designer Jony Ive. Source: OpenAI

1. Design legend heads to OpenAI to work on mysterious device: Best known for his work on the iPhone and MacBook, Jony Ive has been working with Sam Altman on an experimental device that Altman claims is the ā€œcoolest piece of technology the world will have ever seen.ā€ Now, the pair has signed a $6.5B deal to fold Ive’s device startup, io, along with its 55 employees, into OpenAI’s growing hardware division. They plan to unveil a potential smartphone replacement sometime next year. In the meantime, Ive will spearhead all creative and design work for the ChatGPT-maker.

2. Everything you might have missed from Google I/O: Google dropped so many new announcements on Tuesday that I couldn’t even cover everything. For one, a new open-source model called Gemma 3n is so efficient that it needs just 2GB of memory, meaning it can run locally on your phone with no trouble. Other spinoffs include MedGemma for medical imaging and health expertise, SignGemma for sign language translations, and DolphinGemma, for one day communicating with dolphins. Finally, NotebookLM will soon let you generate Video Overviews — or change the length of your Audio Overviews.

3. Mistral unveils frontier coding model: The French startup showed off Devstral, which it claims is now the most powerful open-source coding model available ā€œby a large margin.ā€ Its agentic capabilities mean it’s especially good at understanding the context of larger codebases and spotting bugs hidden inside complex programs. It should make it much easier for developers to build their own coding apps, especially considering it can run locally on a high-powered Mac.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Airtable CEO Howie Liu on how AI is reshaping databases

Howie Liu is the CEO and co-founder of Airtable, a platform that lets anyone create AI-powered spreadsheets, databases, and apps from scratch. More than 500,000 organizations, including AWS, Walmart, and Dropbox, use it every day. We talked to Liu about how you can leverage AI to bring your boldest ideas to life.

1. AI is starting to supercharge databases: Agents now know how to interact with tabs inside your spreadsheets. That lets you automate multi-step tasks that used to take hours of manual work — for example, writing a personalized email to each and every one of your customers, with web research adding additional context to each message.

2. The trillion-dollar question haunting no-code app builders: Are ChatGPT-like chat interfaces here to stay, or are they just paving the way for something else? Liu says it’s probably a bit of both. Airtable’s new Siri-like chatbot can answer questions about your data, but it can also build tables and visuals, giving you another way to interact with your knowledge base.

3. Start by framing your problem: Before rushing into a bunch of new AI-powered workflows, take some time to think about what you actually want AI to do for you. Once you have a very specific goal defined, it becomes much easier to prompt engineer that workflow and measure the results.

4. If you’re a vibe coder, you can let AI teach you along the way: Anyone can now generate a simple app with AI, but scaling up isn’t easy unless you have coding expertise. One way to get around this is to use AI as your interactive teacher, guiding you step-by-step through difficult technical challenges.

5. Reasoning models are far more capable than many of us realize: With models like Claude 3.7 and OpenAI’s o3, ā€œwe’ve just crossed the threshold where the models are actually good enough to reason about domain problems,ā€ Liu said. ā€œI encourage people to actually try the most bold, audacious thing you can throw at AI as you can…You try really advanced stuff, and you will be surprised at how good it is.ā€
