1. Two of AI’s biggest players are teaming up: Amazon just planted its flag with Team Anthropic. It gave the Claude-maker a $4B infusion, and in exchange, Anthropic agreed to make AWS its primary compute partner. It’ll also use Amazon’s custom chips for training — a risky move, since it might have to scale back on Nvidia’s gold-standard GPUs in the process.

Pacific island builds digital version of itself: As rising seas chip away at its coastline, the Polynesian nation Tuvalu has come up with an unconventional strategy to preserve its heritage: Creating a carbon copy of itself in the metaverse. The idea is that Tuvalu can remain a nation online, even if its landmass continues to shrink. The country’s 11,000 inhabitants are also set to receive digital passports preserved on the blockchain.

3. MIT’s training breakthrough: Researchers developed an algorithm that makes teaching AI models between five and 50 times more efficient. Most LLMs spend equal time studying different tasks. But why continue practicing 2+2 when you’ve already moved on to calculus? By dialing in to only the most relevant problems, the researchers were able to achieve the same level of performance while using far less training data.

Apple is rebuilding Siri from the ground up with AI

Apple’s iPhone got a major AI upgrade this fall, but Siri is still stuck in the past. The 13-year-old voice service can do simple tasks, like tell you the weather or give you directions — but it can’t keep up with the likes of ChatGPT and Gemini.

That could change in 2026, when Apple allegedly plans to release a new version of Siri built on the same underlying technology used to power its more capable rivals. “LLM Siri,” as it’s known internally, will be able to handle complicated, multi-step tasks, like navigating third-party apps for you.

The revamped Siri might not be announced officially until 2025, but some of its features could trickle out to iPhone users earlier than that. It’s anyone’s guess how a new Siri might affect Apple’s delicate relationships with Alphabet and OpenAI. ChatGPT is headed to the iPhone in the coming weeks, and Gemini could follow soon after.
