TODAY IN AI
1. Anthropic doubles Claude’s usage limits for two weeks and makes 1M context window generally available: Anthropic is doubling usage limits over the next two weeks across Free, Pro, Max, and Team plans outside of peak hours (weekdays 5am - 11am PST). Users don’t have to take action to claim the bonus usage, it’s being applied automatically to all Claude tools. Separately, Anthropic announced that its full 1M-token context window is now generally available for Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6, with no increase in price. The update lets you upload larger media files to your chats.
2. Meta reportedly considering layoffs that could affect 20% of its workforce: Meta is reportedly weighing major layoffs that could cut 20% or more of its nearly 79,000 employees. This comes as the company looks to offset aggressive spending on AI, including plans to invest $600B on data centers by 2028 and recent acquisitions like Manus. The layoffs are not confirmed yet, and one Meta spokesperson called the report "speculative reporting about theoretical approaches.”
3. Elon Musk admits xAI "was not built right" and is being rebuilt as co-founders continue to leave: Elon Musk acknowledged that his AI startup is being rebuilt from the foundations up as it struggles to keep pace with rivals. The AI startup has seen multiple co-founders depart in recent weeks, including Tony Wu, Igor Babuschkin, Kyle Kosic, and Christian Szegedy. The exodus comes at a bad time as SpaceX — which now owns xAI — is preparing to go public sometime this year.

FROM THE FRONTIER
A German defense startup is using AI to turn cockroaches into spies

Made with Midjourney
Cyborg cockroaches. German defense startup SWARM Biotactics’ latest product is straight out of a James Bond movie: intelligence-gathering cockroaches. The company outfits live roaches with electronic backpacks that hold cameras, microphones, and edge AI processors. Then, it steers the bugs by sending low-voltage electrical impulses to their antennae — causing them to turn, slow down, or stop on command.
Nature’s perfect spy. SWARM Biotactics almost exclusively uses Madagascar hissing cockroaches. They’re the perfect spy: strong enough to carry a small camera, stealthy enough to navigate tight spaces undetected, and they don’t require a battery. The best part? Cockroaches reproduce naturally, which means minimal scaling costs.
Roaches in action. These cyborg insects are designed for environments too risky for humans and too tight for robots. Think: battlefield reconnaissance, hazardous industrial inspections, or search-and-rescue operations in collapsed buildings.
The regulation gap. International arms treaties cover humans, robots, and drones — but not insects. There’s currently no framework governing bio-hybrid surveillance systems and no clear boundary between battlefield recon and civilian surveillance. Legally, cyborg cockroaches operate in no-man’s-land.
