Apple’s next big release could be an AI-powered tabletop robot

The release of a new Apple device is a rare event — something that happens only once every few years. We might have just gotten a sneak peek at what’s next.
Bloomberg reported that hundreds of engineers are working on a multipurpose “tabletop robot,” which will be infused with Apple Intelligence and an AI-powered Siri. The $1,000 device is expected to be released sometime in 2026 or 2027.
What will it look like? Early reporting suggests it’ll resemble an iPad attached to a robotic arm that can swivel 360 degrees. The screen will be able to automatically tilt to face the user during video calls, and it’ll run on a custom version of iOS.
What can it do? It’ll be like an all-in-one “command center” for your home. You’ll be able to monitor security cameras, make video calls, and interact with Siri using your voice.
Why it’s important: For one, Apple thinks it’s a smart business strategy. It recently abandoned its plans for a self-driving car — and this seems to be one of the projects it’s focusing on instead.
Besides its relatively simple HomePod, it’d be the company’s first major foray into the burgeoning home robotics industry, which is expected to grow about 20% per year over the next decade. Similar products from Meta and Amazon have seen mixed success, but Apple could set itself apart by leaning into its robot’s unique AI capabilities.
We’ll be honest: We’re still waiting on a humanoid robot that can help with chores, cooking, and other tasks inside our homes. But Apple’s rumored device could be a solid compromise that bridges the gap between smart home assistants and full-fledged domestic robots.

AI helps an ALS patient speak again
Source: New York Times
When doctors outfitted Casey Harrell with implanted electrodes last year, they warned that their experiment was a long shot. Harrell lives with the neurodegenerative condition ALS and has lost the ability to speak clearly and navigate on his own.
But Researchers at the University of California, Davis wanted to see if they could recreate Harrell’s voice by monitoring electric impulses in his brain and using AI to interpret them. To their surprise, it worked far better than expected, according to the New York Times.
Here’s how it works:
The device is composed of four electrode arrays that can transform Harrell’s mouth and tongue movements into recognizable speech
It works by picking up on certain brain patterns that each represent a unique syllable, then piecing them together to form words
Eventually, Harrell was able to communicate 6,000 unique words with 97.5% accuracy — in a voice resembling his own
Why it’s significant: Platforms like Neuralink have already managed to help paralyzed patients navigate a computer screen with their minds. But recreating someone’s voice is thought to be more difficult because there are so many more variables at play.
