FROM THE FRONTIER

A small research team broke Apple’s hardware defenses in less than a week using Claude Mythos

Made with Midjourney

Five days. Apple spent five years and likely hundreds of millions of dollars developing its latest hardware security system. A small team — armed with Anthropic’s still-unreleased Claude Mythos model — just broke it in less than a week.

The break-in. Last Thursday, researchers at Calif published visual evidence of the first public memory corruption exploit bypassing Apple’s Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE) on M5 chips — a defense Apple touted as its strongest-ever protection against memory attacks. The team then hand-delivered a copy of their report to Apple’s HQ in Cupertino.

Working together. Calif relied on Mythos to surface the bugs quickly, but says human expertise was essential for bypassing MIE itself. The takeaway, per the team, isn’t that Mythos achieved this on its own. It’s that small groups paired with frontier AI can now pull off what used to require entire organizations.

AI bugmageddon. Calif's framing is blunt: “Apple built MIE in a world before Mythos Preview." The two teams are now working to patch the vulnerability. But if even Apple's strongest-ever defense can fall in days, it's a preview of what might be coming for every other system.
