TODAY IN AI
US users can now reach ChatGPT by phone. Source: OpenAI
1. ChatGPT to US users: ‘Call me on my cell phone’: In a blast from the past, you can now talk to ChatGPT toll-free by dialing 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478). But the retro throwback isn’t just for fun. It also means you can now use the platform even if you have no access to the internet.
If you’re in the US, you’ll get 15 minutes of call time per month at no cost, then you’ll have to create an account to keep using the platform
To really immerse yourself in the old-school vibe, you can even call from a flip phone — or a rotary phone
If you’re an international user, you’ll now be able to text ChatGPT directly on WhatsApp via the same number (although the call feature is only available in the US and Canada for now)
2. AI’s immense power needs fuel one of the largest-ever clean energy deals: Chaired by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, California’s Oklo is building small, “modular” nuclear reactors that are more efficient than their traditional counterparts. If its multi-billion-dollar deal with data center company Switch Inc. goes through, it’d let Oklo deliver enough energy to power every house in the state of NY. To keep up, Alphabet and Amazon have their own nuclear partnerships in the works.
3. Microsoft is using AI to monitor endangered wildlife: Nearly 70% of wildlife has been wiped out over the past 50 years, but details about specific species — especially those that roam remote locations — are hard to come by. Now, Microsoft’s open-source Project SPARROW is using AI to monitor wildlife in hard-to-reach places. The solar-powered platform can send crucial images and sounds to scientists via satellite — helping them understand how ecosystems are changing and which species are in need of help.

FROM THE FRONTIER
How a production company used AI to make its latest ad
Source: Tool
A recent study found that more than 60% of advertising agencies are already using generative AI, while an additional 30% are considering it. Production company Tool has been at the heart of two of the industry’s most discussed early AI-meets-production projects – Under Armour’s “Forever is Made Now” and Starburst's “Different Every Time.”
Superhuman got an inside scoop into how their latest experimental spot was made. Here’s more on “Who Says Cars Can’t Dream” for the Land Rover Defender:
The directors wrote a script about a Defender SUV that’s tired of its suburban, monotonous life; instead, it dreams of going on all types of adventures — traversing mountains, deserts, and snowstorms along the way
But to make that idea a reality, you’d have to literally travel the world to capture shots from each of those locales
That’s where AI comes in: Tool used generative platforms like Runway, Kling AI, and Luma to create the photorealistic environments and motion effects seen in the final ad; all told, they make up about 50% of the spot
But since GenAI still struggles with human performances and motion consistency, Tool still incorporated traditional shots of the car and a human actor
The team was able to shoot it all in just one day, saving days of production time
Tool’s president, Dustin Callif, told Superhuman that its hybrid approach is paying off, proving “that AI can be a powerful creative tool for the advertising community”
If you’d like, you can watch the ad and learn more about Tool’s process here.
