A senior researcher at DeepMind argues AI will never be conscious, even if we achieve AGI

The Abstraction Fallacy. Google DeepMind’s Alexander Lerchner believes AI will never achieve consciousness. Not in 5 years, not in 500. His recent paper, The Abstraction Fallacy, argues that subjective experience can't emerge from symbolic computation — and no amount of training data will change that.
The core argument. Lerchner drills into the difference between instantiation and simulation. A human brain instantiates consciousness, where the physical process itself is the experience. AI simulates it, producing outputs that mimic consciousness without ever generating the thing itself.
The viral line. One passage from the paper racked up 1M+ views on X. Lerchner writes: “Expecting an algorithmic description to instantiate the quality it maps is like expecting the mathematical formula of gravity to physically exert weight." In other words, an algorithm describing an emotion is still just a description — the way a map of Manhattan isn't actually Manhattan.
The consciousness debate. Some leaders have speculated that today’s models could be conscious, with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei saying he’s “open to the idea that it could be.” Lerchner argues that simulation, no matter how sophisticated, never crosses into experience.
