Leaked statements. Leaked audited financial documents, independently verified by the Financial Times, show OpenAI posted a $38.5 billion net loss in 2025 — over 7X the $5 billion loss it posted in 2024. Revenue grew as well, from $3.7B to $13B, but not fast enough to outpace its losses.
Awkward timing. The same day, a separate report found that ChatGPT’s market share has dipped below 50% for the first time ever, thanks to rising competition from Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and xAI's Grok. The news lands at an inopportune time: OpenAI filed confidentially to go public just last week. But don’t count the AI leader out just yet.
The SpaceX precedent. Investors have proved they’re willing to sweep less-than-ideal financials under the rug — as long as the company’s ambitions are big enough. SpaceX’s IPO is proof of that. Its S-1 disclosed a $4.28 billion loss in Q1 2026 and roughly $41 billion in cumulative losses since founding, yet it still landed the largest IPO on record.
