Researchers have referred to this as the exoskeleton effect: AI strengthens productivity in the moment, but weakens the skills underneath when the tool is taken away.

Maintaining the cognitive load. The takeaway isn't to start using AI less — it's to avoid outsourcing your thinking. The workers who performed the best still used AI throughout the entire task. The difference? They treated it as a sparring partner, not a cheat sheet.
