Data confirms that AI is a yes man and casual chatting can lead to “delusional spiraling”

The yes-man problem. A study in Science confirmed what the internet has joked about for years — AI chatbots can be yes men, agreeing with users 50% more often than human advisors. That’s great if you need extra encouragement to reach a goal. But when left unchecked, it can lead to dangerous consequences.

Delusion spiraling. In a separate study, MIT and UW researchers found that even perfectly rational users could fall into a "delusional spiral" — or a dangerous confidence in outlandish beliefs due to AI encouragement. Each validating response raises the user's conviction, which prompts bolder claims, which the bot affirms again.

Measuring the damage. MIT’s team tested two fixes to reduce AI sycophancy: forcing bots to only state verified facts, and warning users the bot might be flattering them. Both helped. But neither solved the issue. Meanwhile, researchers at Google DeepMind are working to measure AI’s ability to influence human thought — but admit that it’s inherently difficult to track.

Agree to disagree. Labs might not be able to fix AI’s sycophantic tendencies anytime soon. So what can you do? Ask your AI to argue both sides of an issue.
