Welcome back, Superhuman. Apple can’t catch a break. It’s losing ground to Google’s Gemini, its former star designer is now at OpenAI, and an AI-powered Siri is still MIA. So, a lot was riding on Monday’s WWDC keynote. Was it enough to turn the tide?

TODAY IN AI

Apple unveiled multiple AI-powered features at this week’s WWDC. Source: Apple

1. Apple’s WWDC brings live translations, design overhaul, and more: Apple’s annual conference was a toned-down affair, with a focus on practical upgrades over “game-changing technologies.” Here are some of the highlights:

  • Apple Intelligence can now understand your screen, letting you do things like ask a question about a Google Images result

  • iOS is getting a sleek, glass-inspired overhaul — its biggest in over a decade (although critics say it looks a little too much like 2007’s Windows Vista)

  • A new AI-powered Workout Buddy will give Apple Watch owners personalized health feedback

  • AI can now instantly translate your messages, phone calls, and songs

  • Apple Maps can now learn your preferred route to work

  • ChatGPT has been folded into the Image Playground, giving you more control over your generations

2. But was it enough to silence the critics? Some analysts and influencers said they walked away feeling underwhelmed, especially since the AI-infused Siri first teased in 2024 is still nowhere in sight. Apple itself admitted that this year’s show “was not about disruptive innovation” but instead focused on incremental refinements that will pay off in the long term. Meanwhile, its rivals have already moved on to frontier-level reasoning models and agents.

3. ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice mode gets an upgrade: ChatGPT subscribers can now access a new version of Advanced Voice mode with subtler intonation and natural expressiveness, “making interactions feel more fluid and human-like.” And nearly two and a half years after launching ChatGPT, OpenAI claims it just hit a new milestone: hitting $10B in annual recurring revenue.

FROM THE FRONTIER

AI is getting remarkably good at math, with some caveats

Created with Midjourney

Just days after Apple researchers called the entire notion of “reasoning” models into question, a separate batch of studies from Epoch AI is scrambling the picture all over again. The lab has been asking top mathematicians to submit their hardest imaginable research questions to put top models to the test.

At first, frontier models performed about as expected, getting only around 2% of the questions right. But according to a new report from Scientific American, something changed with OpenAI’s o4-mini. During a secretive May meeting, 30 top mathematicians tried to stump the model but found it a lot trickier than anticipated.

In one case, o4-mini was able to solve an “open question in number theory — a good PhD level problem” in about 10 minutes. The method it used was equally intriguing: It studied similar problems and solved a simplified “toy” version before tackling the full question.

Their conclusion: o4-mini now gets about 20% of the toughest questions right. One participant said the model can basically be thought of as a “strong collaborator” at this point, especially considering it works faster than any human mathematician.

Another perspective: In a separate Epoch AI analysis, mathematicians dug deep into o3-mini’s thoughts. While it showed glimmers of higher-level thought, it still made some glaring errors and logical leaps, leaving one volunteer to call it a “vibes-based inductive reasoner.” So, humans apparently aren’t the only ones trying to vibe-code their way to the right answer.
