FROM THE FRONTIER

Elon Musk loses landmark lawsuit against Sam Altman — but plans to appeal decision

Made with Midjourney

The trial. Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Greg Brockman just wrapped up a three-week courtroom battle that featured corporate secrets, private emails, and personal diary entries. The issue on the docket: Did OpenAI betray its nonprofit mission and mislead Musk when it converted to a for-profit entity?

The background. Musk was an early backer of OpenAI, investing roughly $38M during its early years. He accused Altman of pitching OpenAI as a nonprofit that was “developing AI for the benefit of humanity” — only to later convert it into a for-profit venture now valued at $852B. In Musk’s words, Altman “stole a charity.”

The testimony. Musk's lawyers painted Altman as deceptive, citing ex-CTO Mira Murati's description of him as someone who'd "say one thing to one person and completely the opposite to another." There were plenty of mic-drop moments, and the WSJ collected all the “juiciest evidence here.”

The verdict. The 9-person jury rejected Musk’s claims in under two hours, ruling that the statute of limitations had expired — a decision Musk plans to appeal. The ruling clears a major obstacle ahead of OpenAI's expected IPO later this year.
