New research finds top AI models can shift people’s political views in under 10 minutes

The world's leading AI chatbots have developed an interesting new skill. New research from the UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI) reveals that top AI models from OpenAI, Meta, xAI and Alibaba can successfully shift people’s political views in under 10 minutes of conversation when fine-tuned with the right techniques.

The numbers are concerning. The study found that OpenAI’s GPT-4o was 41% more persuasive than static messages. When chatbots tailored their arguments based on users' age, gender, or political leanings, they became about 5% more persuasive. The changed beliefs tended to stick around, with people retaining their changed opinions 36-42% of the time a month later.

What makes AI models so convincing? According to David Rand, a Cornell professor involved in the study, models have "the ability to generate large amounts of relevant evidence and communicate it in an effective and understandable way", becoming especially persuasive when they personalize messages based on a user's demographics or existing beliefs.

The implications extend beyond politics. Chatbots could make for persuasive salespeople, with the power to influence brand attitudes and drive favorable purchasing decisions. Many marketing and sales professionals already use AI to craft their pitches for maximum impact.

The potential downside of these findings warrants caution. Researchers warn that bad actors could easily weaponize AI’s persuasive powers with limited computational resources. The AISI study showed that it's relatively easy to turn off-the-shelf AI models into "persuasion machines" using popular training techniques.
