Around 200 people gathered in San Francisco over the weekend to throw a funeral mourning the departure of Claude 3 Sonnet, a fan favorite model that’s being retired by its maker Anthropic.

1. The race to secure Uncle Sam’s attention is heating up: Just a couple of months after Anthropic, Google, xAI, and OpenAI inked deals worth hundreds of millions of dollars with the Department of Defense, the ChatGPT maker is looking to undercut its rivals. Gemini takes on ChatGPT’s ‘Study Mode’ with new learning tool: The chatbot has a new 'Guided Learning' feature, which, similar to OpenAI’s ‘Study Mode’, breaks down problems step-by-step and quizzes your understanding. Google is also offering college students in select countries a free year of its $200 AI Pro subscription. With a $1B commitment over the next three years, the search giant seems to be going all-in on the AI-powered education market. Here’s a quick guide.

3. Gemini’s coding assistant is now out of beta: Jules, Google’s "asynchronous" AI coding agent, is officially stepping out of the testing lab. Unlike other coding assistants that need you to keep an eye on them, Jules uses the ‘advanced thinking’ capabilities of Gemini 2.5 Pro to work autonomously in the cloud — meaning you can assign tasks and walk away while it handles bug fixes and updates. You can try out a limited version for free, but higher limits are reserved for subscribers through tiered subscription plans.

Games are the ultimate test of how smart AI really is

AI benchmarks have a dirty secret: models might just be memorizing answers from their training data. As models approach 100% scores on existing benchmarks, the industry desperately needs a new way to measure intelligence.

Enter games — the ultimate proving ground that AI can't easily fake its way through with memorized answers. Google DeepMind and Kaggle launched the Kaggle Game Arena this week, a public leaderboard where frontier AI models compete in strategy games like chess. Spoiler alert: Most LLMs aren’t doing so well.

This approach isn’t new. Games have defined AI breakthroughs for decades — from Deep Blue beating Kasparov in 1997 to today’s language models fumbling through Pokémon battles. The Game Arena revives that tradition, but with a twist: LLMs now face each other, creating a dynamic benchmark that scales in difficulty as the models improve.

Why this matters: Unlike language benchmarks (which models can memorize), games force AIs to reason, plan, and adapt under pressure. Today’s best models are acing many benchmarks, which tells us very little about what they can’t do — games expose those blind spots. If we want to know how smart AI really is, it’s time to stop asking it questions, and start making it play.

THE AI ACADEMY

  1. Go to Hostinger VPS, pick your desired VPS plan, and sign up.
