Meta claims upcoming model matches GPT-5.5

Welcome back, Superhuman. Don’t write Meta off just yet. After years of playing catch-up, the company’s superintelligence chief Alexandr Wang has reportedly teased the Instagram maker’s upcoming model, claiming it could put Meta back within striking distance of OpenAI.

1. Meta claims its next model has caught up to GPT-5.5: Alexandr Wang, the company’s superintelligence chief, has reportedly claimed that the company's next flagship model (codenamed 'Watermelon') has matched OpenAI's GPT-5.5 on key benchmarks. Wang also hinted publicly that a Muse Spark update is coming soon, with gains in coding capabilities aimed at closing the gap with Anthropic's Claude Opus. The company is spending up to $145B on AI infrastructure this year.

2. South Korea is going all-in on AI chips: President Lee Jae Myung has ordered officials to fast-track permits and infrastructure for a $576B chip and AI investment program, with Samsung and SK Hynix each investing $260B in new manufacturing sites. The urgency is well-founded: Samsung is expected to report an 18-fold profit jump to a record $56B this quarter on AI memory demand, while SK Hynix, up 273% this year, is launching a $28B Nasdaq listing to fund the expansion.

3. Nvidia unveils program to get more GPUs into AI startups' hands: The chipmaker has launched a partnership initiative connecting fast-growing AI startups with its network of cloud providers, giving them access to critical computing infrastructure without buying chips outright. Two Australian firms are first in line: Sharon AI will deploy 40,000 Nvidia GPUs, while Firmus Technologies is building a data center in Indonesia. Startups will share product and cloud revenue with Nvidia in exchange for access.

The robots are coming (or are they?). The consensus on AI and the labor market is that the machines are going to take over sooner or later — whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate. But a new study claims that assumption might be wrong, at least for the moment.

Narrative violation. In a new report, researchers at Ramp linked corporate AI spending to headcount data across nearly 22,000 US firms. They found that companies that adopted AI most aggressively actually grew their white-collar workforce 10.2% in the two years following adoption. Entry-level hiring, widely assumed to be first on the chopping block, rose even faster.

Some more unexpected hiring trends:

Zooming out: None of this means that AI can’t displace jobs in the long run. Plenty of layoffs are real, and the hiring gains cluster heavily around tech and other heavy spenders. But the picture is messier — and perhaps rosier — than the doomsday headlines suggest.
