TODAY IN AI

1. OpenAI’s new hire hints at what’s next: The startup has named Fidji Simo, the current CEO of Instacart and a longtime Meta exec, as its new CEO of Applications. It’s yet another sign that the company is moving into a new phase — one where it’s just as focused on keeping users happy and engaged via apps like ChatGPT as it is on reaching AGI. This all comes as OpenAI continues to wrestle with its corporate structure and the balance of power between its nonprofit board and for-profit ambitions.

2. Apple snubs Google as it looks for new AI partners: Google has been Safari’s default search engine for over two decades, but an Apple exec just told a judge that could soon change. Safari searches have started declining for the first time in 22 years, and to turn things around, Apple wants to add AI-powered search tools like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude into the mix. That revelation caused Google’s stock to plummet 7%, but its big I/O conference is right around the corner, which could help it get back in the game.

3. New coding tool claims to be the ‘world’s fastest’: Open-source coding platform Zed has been around since 2023, but a new agentic editing feature supposedly now makes it the “fastest in the world.” You can use it for just about anything, “from asking questions about your code base to having it directly make changes and write new code.” It’ll work in the background and send you a notification when it’s finished. Unlike Cursor and Windsurf, which both tap into Microsoft’s popular VS Code, Zed uses the Rust programming language, which is built around speed and performance.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Meta could bring AI-powered facial recognition to its smart glasses

If you’re bad with names, Meta might soon have a sci-fi solution for you. The social media giant is reportedly working on an experimental, AI-powered software that can scan the faces of the people around you and detect exactly who they are.

The “super-sensing” feature could eventually land on Meta’s popular Ray-Ban smart glasses, although there are a lot of security and privacy concerns the company would have to navigate first.

Meta’s live AI tool can already record you as you go throughout your day, letting you ask questions about your surroundings in real-time. With a 30-minute battery life, the feature is more of a tech demo at this point. But if Meta can keep refining it, it could definitely come in handy for things like helping you find your misplaced keys.

Apple’s not far behind: It’s allegedly getting closer to having its own specialized chips for upcoming smart glasses, AI servers, and next-gen MacBooks. It also wants to add cameras to its AirPods and smartwatches so they can tap into more AI features.
