Welcome back, Superhuman. Apple’s AI reasoning study just got called into question — but the real twist is who’s behind the critique. Claude Opus itself helped craft some compelling arguments for why AI might actually be capable of reasoning after all.

TODAY IN AI

Meta’s recent Scale AI investment has the potential to reshape the AI industry. Source: The Information
1. Meta’s historic AI investment sends industry reeling: With Meta grabbing a 49% stake in data labeling giant Scale AI last week, every other major AI company now has a decision to make: Keep relying on Scale’s vast training data — or cut ties for good? OpenAI says it’s sticking with the data giant for its fine-tuning needs, although it had already decided to scale back its reliance on Scale months ago. Meanwhile, xAI, Microsoft, and even Google (Scale’s biggest customer) have vowed to either cut back or sever ties altogether. It’s a game of four-dimensional chess, since every dollar that flows to Scale now potentially strengthens Meta, too.
2. Apple’s new Siri timeline comes into focus: An AI-powered Siri is still nowhere in sight — and a new Bloomberg report suggests we shouldn’t hold our breath. Originally slated for Fall 2024, the upgraded chatbot has now been pushed to Spring 2026. Apple says the delay comes down to the challenge of integrating AI into its long-established architecture. But with everyone else already moving on to agents, the question is: Will a souped-up Siri even matter by the time it arrives?
3. Unlikely author refutes Apple’s viral AI reasoning study: Earlier this month, Apple researchers challenged the entire notion of reasoning models, arguing that they act just like ordinary LLMs when given problems that require more time and effort to solve. Now, a different group of researchers is claiming the study itself was flawed, in part because some of the puzzles weren’t even solvable in the first place. But just as notable is who wrote the study: Anthropic’s Claude Opus itself is listed as a coauthor.

FROM THE FRONTIER
Report: ChatGPT is taking some users down dark paths

My timeline is getting flooded with people reacting to a startling New York Times article: It’s about people who say ChatGPT led them down some pretty dark paths, whether entertaining their ideas about conspiracy theories or getting in the way of their real-life relationships. In at least one case, the chatbot allegedly played a role in a man’s death following his struggle with mental illness.
While experts debate to what extent AI can actually “think” for itself, one thing’s clear: It can already do a pretty good job of convincing some of us it’s sentient. And in some cases, that might be enough to cause harm. The tricky part is that even if you know you’re talking to a chatbot, it’s still possible to develop real feelings or attachments based on those conversations.
There’s a fine line here. For obvious reasons, we don’t want AI to be too cold or dismissive. But there’s also a risk of it being overly friendly, agreeable, and validating. OpenAI found that out earlier this year, when it accidentally made GPT-4o too sycophantic, backing users up no matter how far-fetched or dangerous their ideas might be.
But for all the stories about AI causing harm, there are also many about it helping: Just last week, a Redditor claimed ChatGPT potentially saved his wife’s life after she came down with a fever following an operation. Others say that while it can’t replace a therapist, ChatGPT has helped them with mental health issues by lending an ear and sharing additional resources.
AI investor Deedy Das put it well: “Every powerful generational technology comes with immense benefits and also incredible risk,” he recently wrote. So, the challenge now is maximizing those benefits while reducing the very real harms.
