Meta set to debut new smart glasses for under $1,000

ALSO: How to add music to your videos with AI

Welcome back, Superhuman. It seems like many in the AI industry are converging on the same view: users don’t want a PhD in their pocket — they want a friend, a lover, or an assistant. Some of the new features and product positioning coming out of major AI labs (such as Grok’s chat avatars and Meta’s AI characters) seem to confirm this line of thinking.

TODAY IN AI

1. Meta's upcoming smart glasses could be a lot more wallet-friendly: The company is reportedly slashing the expected price of its 'Hypernova' glasses from $1,000+ to around $800, according to Bloomberg. The glasses are set to debut next month with a tiny heads-up-display built into one lens. If true, the price cut would mean that the company is willing to accept lower profit margins to make the AR headset more accessible, though style variations and prescription lenses could bump up the starting price.

2. Duolingo’s rollercoaster week highlights looming AI risk for businesses: The platform's stock had surged 30% after a strong quarter driven by effective AI use. But when OpenAI showed off language learning capabilities during the GPT-5 launch a couple of weeks ago, investors got spooked, erasing half of Duolingo's gains. It’s a stark reminder that AI models can replicate established product features with a single update, turning each new model release into a potential existential threat for several product categories.

3. OpenAI staff look to sell $6B in stock to Softbank, other investors: The ChatGPT maker is set to become the world's most valuable startup at an eye-watering $500B valuation, as current and former staff prepare to sell around $6B worth of shares to investors including SoftBank, Thrive Capital, and Dragoneer. The deal comes on top of a separate ongoing $40B funding round led by SoftBank, with OpenAI expecting to triple its revenue to $12.7B this year.

FROM THE FRONTIER

AI is minting a new wave of billionaires at an unprecedented pace

Made with Midjourney

We could be witnessing the largest wealth boom in modern history. Massive fundraising rounds have minted dozens of new billionaires this year alone. According to market research platform CB Insights, there are now 498 AI "unicorns" worth a combined $2.7T, with 100 of them founded since 2023.

The pace is staggering. Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab launched in February and had raised $2B by July at a $12B valuation. Anthropic is reportedly nearing a $170B valuation — triple its valuation from March. And 25-year-old Michael Truell's Anysphere jumped from a $9.9B valuation to offers of $18B-20B in just weeks. Bloomberg's analysis shows that 15 founders across just four AI companies are already worth a combined $38B, with another 14 individuals set to join the ranks as pending funding rounds close.

We’ve never seen anything like this. Amazon took 24 years to hit $1T in valuation. Google needed 21 years. Facebook reached $100B nine years after launch. By contrast, OpenAI is reportedly approaching a $500B valuation just 6 years after its founding, with most of that growth compressed into the 18 months that followed ChatGPT's release.

What's driving this boom? Unlike previous waves that required building physical infrastructure or accumulating users over time, AI firms can leverage existing cloud computing resources and distribution channels to scale almost instantly. Add in trillions in investable capital chasing limited AI opportunities, and you have the perfect conditions for relentless acceleration in company valuations.

But there’s a caveat. Most AI fortunes exist solely on paper. Many of these companies are tucked inside complex structures (like OpenAI's nonprofit/for-profit hybrid), making their true value mysterious, effectively preventing founders from cashing out. The valuations themselves can be wildly inconsistent — China’s DeepSeek is worth either $1B or $150B, depending on who you ask.
