Chasing crazy. In an interview with OpenAI, mathematician Terence Tao says that AI gives him the ability to “try crazier things” through rapid experimentation. While we tend to focus on AI’s ability to spin up websites or spreadsheets, some of its biggest advancements are increasingly landing in the lab.
Predicting the weather. WindBorne Systems is building what it calls a “planetary nervous system” — a platform that’s forecasting storms more accurately than leading government agencies. Building digital twins. Mantis Biotech is developing synthetic datasets and physics-based "digital twins" of the human body. The goal? To fill gaps where real medical data is scarce, like rare diseases. AI anchors the pipeline: an LLM-based system routes, validates, and synthesizes the data before a physics engine renders the digital twins.
Equipping crazy. What links many of these bets isn't the science itself — it's the falling cost of trying, both financially and logistically. As purpose-built platforms like Co-Scientist continue to empower researchers, you can expect the number of people chasing “crazy” ideas to accelerate.
