Memory meltdown. Your next phone, laptop, or gaming console purchase could be pricier than you expect, thanks to an ongoing memory chip shortage fueled by the data center boom. The shortage is now projected to last through 2027, which means electronics prices are likely set to climb.

The math. Memory production needs to grow 12% annually through 2027 to meet demand. It’s pacing at just 7.5%. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron (the companies that account for 90% of the global memory market) are scrambling to build new fabs — but new capacity could take years to become available.

Pricing squeeze. Smartphones are already getting pricier and less abundant. Global shipments are projected to drop 13% in 2026 — a loss of 160 million units and the steepest single-year decline in over a decade. As a result, average selling prices just hit a record $523, up 14% YoY, and sub-$100 phones are considered “permanently uneconomical.”

But there’s a bright side. More efficient AI models could help ease the squeeze. For example, a new technique from Google called TurboQuant cuts LLM memory consumption by 6X — with zero accuracy loss. If techniques like this one scale, demand for memory chips could soften and help ease electronics prices.
