1. Meta scoops four top OpenAI researchers: WSJ reports that the social media giant is adding three members of OpenAI’s Zurich office to its superintelligence team, which is racing to build a model that surpasses human intelligence. On top of that, TechCrunch learned that a fourth OpenAI researcher, Trapit Bansal, is also heading to Meta. Bansal’s departure is likely a major blow to OpenAI, as he was a key player behind its first-ever reasoning model. Whether anyone actually got a rumored $100M pay package remains a mystery.

2. HeyGen can now turn your ideas into complete videos: The generative platform just unveiled what it’s calling “the world’s first Creative Operating System” — essentially an agent that can transform your docs, footage, and text prompts into full-fledged ads, social media videos, and short films. The tool works like an entire production crew by finding a good narrative thread, writing a script, selecting clips, and casting AI actors. 3. New study explores Claude’s emotional intelligence: Surprisingly, only around 3% of conversations with Claude are centered around emotions or well-being, and just 0.5% involve companionship or role-playing. But just because these chats are rare, it doesn’t mean they’re not important. Interestingly, Claude’s emotional conversations (coaching, counseling, etc.) tend to end on a high note, although Anthropic can’t say for sure whether that leads to positive real-world outcomes.

Napster’s back — with plans to reshape the web as we know it

Napster CTO Edo Segal has been fascinated with AI ever since coming across the source code for Eliza, one of the world’s first chatbots, as an 11-year-old. Decades later, our AI interfaces — usually just a basic text box — haven’t really changed.

As the founder of the AI company Touchcast, Segal has been building a different kind of platform that adapts to you. Touchcast was recently acquired by AI/VR company Infinite Reality, which has since rebranded to Napster (yes, that Napster). The company just announced two major releases, and Segal gave us an early look at each one.

Napster Companion:

• This platform lets you chat with thousands of AI avatars, each with a different set of skills and personality traits.

• There are mental health guides, career strategists, chefs, and so on. They can use tools, see what’s on your screen, and remember your past conversations.

• You can also generate your own avatars by typing in a prompt. And if you ask a more open-ended question, like “How do I knit a sweater?” you’ll get a series of YouTube-like, AI-generated tutorials that you can alter in real time.

Napster View: This 3D holographic device sits on top of your monitor, like a “feather light” webcam, except it’s designed to help you interact with each of your AI companions, making these conversations feel more life-like and immersive. (You can use it to talk to other humans, too.)
