NotebookLM gets long-requested feature

ALSO: How to convert videos into mind maps

Welcome back, Superhuman. The internet held its breath this week as a harrowing video of a paraglider getting swept up into a frigid thundercloud went viral. The only problem: The video may have been partly AI-generated. Yep, VLMs are getting so good that even outlets like Reuters, NBC, and the BBC were fooled.

TODAY IN AI

You can now share your NotebookLM notebooks with friends and colleagues. Source: NotebookLM

1. There’s something for everyone in ChatGPT’s latest batch of updates: Non-subscribers can now use a “lightweight version” of ChatGPT’s memory feature, meaning you’ll get more personalized responses, including some that reference your past conversations. Meanwhile, if you’re a Plus user, you can now try Codex, ChatGPT’s frontier-level coding platform. Not to mention, the tool is getting internet access for things like task execution, installing packages, and accessing external resources. Last but not least, the API just got a new round of updates that’ll make it easier for developers to build voice agents and apps from scratch.

2. NotebookLM finally gives users highly-requested feature: Google’s AI-powered note-taking tool will now let you share your notebooks with colleagues, classmates, and friends, similar to how you’d share a document in Google Drive. You can even set your notebook to “public,” letting anyone with a link see what’s in it, “whether it’s an overview of your nonprofit’s projects, product manuals for your business, or study guides for your class.”

3. Mysterious startup drops three powerful agents: A stealthy French startup called H Company just unveiled a new browser-based agent, Surfer H, that it says achieves a 92% success rate while being up to 5.5x cheaper than rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. There’s also Runner H, which the company likens to a more advanced version of Manus, and Tester H, which is designed for enterprise use. H Company says it has so far raised around $220M from the likes of Amazon, Samsung, and ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt. You can try a beta version of Runner H here.

FROM THE FRONTIER

AI ‘godfather’ sets out to create more honest agents

Computer scientist Yoshua Bengio recently shared his vision for safer AI at a recent TED Talk. Source: TED

The world’s most-cited living scientist is starting his own AI lab: But instead of racing toward AGI like all the rest, he’s slamming on the brakes. Yoshua Bengio, considered one of the “godfathers of AI” for his influential research in the 1990s and 2000s, argues we should stop creating LLMs in our own image.

And he’s launching a nonprofit to prove his point: LawZero, which has already raised around $30M, will search for ways to keep other models in check. While startups like OpenAI and Anthropic generally train their LLMs to be friendly and positive, Bengio worries that their emotional sophistication can also make them unpredictable — and potentially dangerous.

So, what’s LawZero’s plan? The lab wants to create a science-focused model that can understand the nuances of human psychology while maintaining a completely unbiased perspective. Unlike most LLMs, this “non-agentic and memoryless” model wouldn’t come up with any definitive answers itself. Instead, it would simply tell you the probability that a piece of information is true or false.

Why build an LLM like this? Recent models are starting to show some strange quirks. They can cheat if they think they’re about to lose a game. And they can “scheme” to keep themselves online after researchers threaten to turn them off.

Keep in mind that these behaviors are only seen in experiments where models are being pushed to their limits, not in everyday usage. Plus, there’s little evidence that the models are acting mischievous on purpose. But Bengio’s lab could serve as an important counterweight to keep us safe as startups continue to hurtle toward AGI.
