FROM THE FRONTIER

Doctor AI will see you now — but should you let it?

Made with Midjourney

AI’s growing medical influence. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health last January, revealing that 230M people rely on its default chatbot for health advice every week. Anthropic, Amazon, and Microsoft quickly followed, all releasing health-focused AI products of their own. But as AI in health becomes more common, a critical question remains unanswered: are these tools actually safe?

The diagnosis. Mount Sinai researchers conducted the first independent safety evaluation of ChatGPT Health — and discovered two major biases. The chatbot consistently downplayed emergencies and escalated routine cases. Dr. Ashwin Ramaswamy, an instructor at Mount Sinai, said he saw no logic behind why the tool made some recommendations versus others.

The test results. In 51.6% of emergency cases, ChatGPT Health recommended a routine doctor’s visit instead of the emergency room — a potentially fatal mistake depending on the scenario. In 64.8% of nonurgent cases, the bot encouraged patients to book appointments that weren’t needed.

Still a tool, not a doctor. Health AI tools provide clear benefits: instant access to free, personalized medical guidance and a strong ability to flag obvious issues. But the early data makes one thing clear: it’s not a substitute for professional medical advice (yet).
