AI has opened the door to financial scams — and companies are struggling to keep up

Expense management platforms are reporting a significant surge in AI-generated fake receipts, according to a report by the Financial Times. SAP's research found that more than 70% of CFOs now believe their employees are using AI to falsify expenses, with 10% being certain that it’s already happened within their companies.

This isn’t the first instance (and it won’t be the last). From creating entire fake businesses to eerily realistic video calls from “family members,” AI-enabled financial fraud is on the rise. Just last year, a cybercriminal used AI to clone WPP CEO Mark Reed’s voice, nearly tricking employees into wiring thousands of dollars. The UK raised the alarm on AI-powered financial scams earlier this year, reporting £629M in stolen funds from UK residents — a 17% jump in cases compared to the previous year.

"There is zero barrier for entry," says Mason Wilder from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. "You don't need any technological skills." The recent explosion in fake receipts took off with the launch of GPT-4o's improved image generation in March. What used to take extensive image editing skills now only needs a simple text prompt.

Companies are fighting AI with AI. Visa used AI to flag nearly $1B in fraud attempts, dismantling 25,000 scam merchant operations worldwide. Other companies are deploying AI tools to scan for metadata signatures and analyze patterns across submissions. But it's an arms race.
