We knew 2025 would be the year of AI agents. But OpenAI didn’t even give us a month to settle in. The startup just unveiled a new tool that can navigate computers and make real-world decisions on its own, putting us one step closer toward AGI.

TODAY IN AI

1. OpenAI’s Operator ushers in AI’s next era: The startup’s first agentic platform could redefine our relationship with AI, making it more like a dynamic collaborator, not just a passive tool. Operator uses a new model called CUA (computer using agent) to navigate the web just like humans — while narrating its thoughts along the way. It means you can do complicated tasks like booking a trip with just a simple prompt. We’ll dive into some of Operator’s best use cases below.

2. That’s not the only AI agent available today: Perplexity was working on its own agent behind-the-scenes, too. The fully multimodal Perplexity Assistant uses AI search, advanced reasoning, and app navigation to interpret things on your screen or camera and help you with daily tasks. You can even hand over the reins and ask it to do things like schedule an Uber, play a song, or book a reservation on your behalf. Keep in mind, it’s only available on Androids for now.

3. Alphabet challenges OpenAI with no-cost o1 alternative: The tech giant unveiled an update called Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking that lets Gemini explain its thought process, just like OpenAI’s frontier reasoning model — and you don’t need a subscription to try it out. That technique makes it competitive with o1 across math and science, but with five times the tokens, meaning it can theoretically handle more in-depth prompts.

FROM THE FRONTIER

If it thinks like a human, writes like a human, and surfs the web like a human, then it must be…OpenAI’s new Operator agent? Ok, Operator isn’t technically human-level yet, but its unique capabilities prove LLMs are getting better at performing real-world tasks on their own — thought to be a major milestone toward AGI.

Here are some examples of what it can do:

  • Use an uploaded picture of your shopping list to order ingredients from a grocery store of your choosing

  • Find tickets to an upcoming NBA game while keeping your preferred price range in mind

  • Order a pizza with toppings of your choosing from your favorite restaurant

  • Remember details like your zip code to deliver more relevant results

  • Perform multiple tasks in parallel (You’ll get notifications when each task is completed)

What about safety? You’ll get a chance to intervene before Operator makes any big decisions, like placing a restaurant reservation. Certain websites are off-limits, and it won’t respond to questions deemed harmful or dangerous. But it’s not fool-proof, and OpenAI says it’s still figuring out ways to make sure Operator can’t veer off the rails.

When can we try it? The new tool is already available to Pro users in the US, while Plus subscribers will get access “in the coming months.”
