1. Zoom rebrand marks end of an era: Things we associate with the pandemic: Masks, social distancing, sourdough — and of course, Zoom, which became so common we started using it as a verb. But with competitors like Microsoft Teams hot on its heels, the platform announced this week it’s dropping “Video” from its title and pivoting to AI. The idea is to build new LLM-powered tools that will tackle various tasks for you, one day “allowing you to work just four days per week.”

2. Perplexity CEO teases affordable AI device: Ask and you shall receive. Perplexity’s Aravind Srinivas surveyed his X followers this week to see if they’d be interested in a $50 AI gadget that can “reliably answer your questions voice to voice.” The post got more than 7,000 likes, so Srinivas vowed to build it. Perplexity joins Midjourney, OpenAI, and Rabbit in the race to develop an AI gadget as ubiquitous as smartphones.

3. Inflection taps out: The AI model race is a marathon, and Inflection AI just gassed out. Instead of sparring with giants like Microsoft (which poached Inflection’s founders and much of its staff last year for $650M), the company is switching gears under its new CEO and dropping out of the AI model race entirely. Instead, Inflection will now be pivoting to create AI tools for enterprise customers.

How to expand videos using Gen-3 Alpha Turbo

Runway recently released its Expand feature that allows you to generate beyond the edges of a frame and turn horizontal videos into vertical videos, and vice versa - without compromising details or framing. Here’s how:

• Go to the RunwayML website and log in.

• Select Generative Video and make sure you choose Gen-3 Alpha Turbo as the model.

• Upload your video or select from existing videos and click on Expand in the left panel.

• Write in your prompt or you can simply expand the video without writing any prompt.

• Now, select your preferred video size and click on Generate.

• Wait for a few seconds and your video will expand flawlessly.

• You can download the video and share it once it's generated.

OpenAI’s Sora leaks early

Users briefly got their hands on OpenAI’s long-awaited Sora Tuesday — but not in the way anyone expected. First announced in February, the startup’s text-to-video model has yet to see a wide release. But a group of early testers beat OpenAI to the punch this week, releasing a prototype on HuggingFace for all to use.

The leakers — a group of about a dozen digital artists — said they shared the model early as an act of protest. They want OpenAI to compensate its beta testers and give them more creative autonomy. (For its part, OpenAI says it puts few constraints on its reviewers — and that their feedback is always optional.)

For about three hours, anyone could generate their own 10-second videos at 1080p with Sora’s Turbo variant, and social media was awash with users’ creations. No matter what you think of the protest, the consensus is that Sora is really good, maybe even “an order of magnitude better” than anything else currently available.
