OpenAI's stunning reversal

ALSO: How to bring old photos to life with AI

Welcome back, Superhuman. OpenAI could only hold out for so long. Last month, more than 30 experts tried to halt the startup’s plan to turn into a for-profit company. And that was on top of Elon Musk’s multiple lawsuits. Well, it looks like all that pressure was finally enough to break the camel’s back.

TODAY IN AI

A new browser called Fellou can allegedly send multiple agents off to do research for you. Source: FellouAI

1. OpenAI abandons for-profit plans in stunning reversal: The ChatGPT-maker wanted to cut ties with its non-profit board so it could keep investors happy and raise revenue with no strings attached. But OpenAI has finally caved to its critics, including co-founder Elon Musk, who’d argued that the move would give the startup too much power. Under the new plan, OpenAI’s non-profit board will continue to control and own most of the company. Meanwhile, its for-profit division will turn into a public benefit corporation, giving it a structure closer to Anthropic and xAI.

2. It’s confirmed, vibe coding is here to stay: In other OpenAI news, the company allegedly finalized a deal to buy Windsurf (or Codeium, for those who remember the AI coding assistant’s former name) for a whopping $3B. It’d mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date. Meanwhile, Cursor-maker Anysphere just landed another $900M in fresh funding, more than tripling its valuation to $9B in only a few months. The startup reportedly brought in $200M last month alone, making it “one of the fastest-growing software companies ever.”

3. Startup unveils ‘world’s first’ fully agentic browser: An elusive startup called Fellou took social media by storm this week with a new browser that it says can perform all sorts of complex actions for you. Once you give it a task, it can supposedly open multiple tabs and assign different agents to tackle each step. It also knows how to navigate webpages and can generate in-depth reports similar to OpenAI’s deep research tool. You can apply to be an early adopter here. FROM THE FRONTIER

The US is losing AI talent, but education could turn things around

Source: Rachyl Jones/Semafor/Zeki Data

Over 250 CEOs just signed an open letter calling on the US to make AI and computer science education a requirement for K-12 students. They say that if those classes were mandatory, it could generate as much as “$660B in economic potential every year for everyday Americans” and lead to 8% higher wages for students themselves.

The timing isn’t a coincidence: A new Semafor report shows something surprising. The rate of AI talent leaving the US is now about the same as those entering. That’s a big difference from only a few years ago, when hundreds more AI experts were coming into the country.

What’s the cause?

  • One reason is that China is now becoming a formidable AI competitor, and many computer scientists there see no reason to leave.

  • According to the Hoover Institute, about half of the employees at DeepSeek studied inside China instead of going elsewhere for their degrees — a stark difference from how things used to be.

  • The same goes for talent in India, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

What’s the solution? The nonprofit behind the open letter, CSforALL, thinks the answer lies in education. There’s a lot of debate about whether coding skills should even be taught anymore, now that AI can automate a lot of the process. For his part, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke thinks it’s well worth it. If nothing else, “we will continue to need professional developers to fix big problems that the everyday person can’t, more than ever,” he wrote.
