OpenAI unveils Sora 2 with TikTok-style feed

Researchers warn AI-generated ‘workslop’ is hurting worker productivity

A new word is making the rounds in American workplaces — and it’s highlighting a growing (but hidden) problem. “Workslop” is used to describe AI-generated work that appears legitimate but lacks the substance needed to actually move projects forward.

It’s a growing concern as organizations increasingly rely on AI for everyday tasks. According to BetterUp Labs and Stanford Social Media Lab, ‘workslop‘ refers to content that “masquerades as good work” but is incomplete, confusing, or missing key context. Slick slides, reports, or code may look polished, but they don’t actually get the job done. The real damage happens when the subpar work gets passed along to teammates, forcing them to clean up the mess.

It’s more widespread than you might think. In an ongoing survey of 1,150 US workers, 40% reported receiving workslop in the past month. Nearly two hours are lost per instance, costing companies millions in hidden productivity losses. BetterUp Labs researchers suggest this could explain why 95% of organizations see no return on their AI investments — AI tools might create more work instead of eliminating it.

Workslop erodes trust, and leaders need to set boundaries. Half of employees said low-effort work makes colleagues seem less reliable or creative, and many avoid working with them. However, banning AI isn’t the answer; managers and leaders need to set clear guardrails for their teams around norms and acceptable use of AI tools.
