Superintelligence, at a price

Welcome back, Superhuman. What do billionaires and college freshmen have in common? Apparently, both turn to AI for late-night study sessions. Google just rolled out a big NotebookLM update packed with expert-curated notebooks to help you do the same.

TODAY IN AI

Meta’s first supercluster could come online as soon as next year. Source: Mark Zuckerberg/Facebook

1. Meta’s superintelligence push takes shape: With a hand-picked dream team in place, Meta is now zeroing in on its AI infrastructure needs. Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the company is pouring “hundreds of billions” into massive supercluster data centers, some the size of several Manhattan neighborhoods. But there’s a catch: To cover those sky-high costs, reports suggest Meta might follow in the footsteps of OpenAI and pivot to a closed-source strategy – which would be a major blow to solo founders, nonprofits, and researchers.

2. Windsurf has a new home after whirlwind weekend: Just days ago, Google announced it had poached top talent from Windsurf, throwing the future of the vibe coding startup into jeopardy. That all changed on Monday, when Cognition, the company behind popular AI programming platform Devin, swooped in with a surprise acquisition. By combining their efforts, the new team hopes to outmaneuver big tech rivals with agents that can perform complex coding tasks independently.

3. Apple scrambles to get its AI plans back on track: With its foundation models chief headed to Meta, Apple shareholders are itching for the iPhone-maker to make a big move. One idea that insiders have floated: Instead of building a proprietary LLM from scratch, Apple could acquire French AI startup Mistral, which specializes in frontier open-source models. While Apple tends to avoid risky acquisitions, it might just be the shakeup it needs to get back in the game.

FROM THE FRONTIER

NotebookLM unlocks new way to learn from experts with AI

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang just revealed his No. 1 use for AI, and the answer might surprise you: “My primary use case for AI is doing research and being my tutor,” he said in a clip that’s now going viral. “It’s helping me become better informed in a lot of different fields I’m otherwise relatively new at.”

If, like Huang, you turn to AI for research help, Google’s AI-powered study tool, NotebookLM, just got a major update that you might be interested in. For the first time, you can access expert-curated notebooks covering a wide variety of topics.

Here’s a quick sample:

  • Science-backed parenting advice for the digital age, courtesy of psychology professor Jacqueline Nesi

  • Evidence-based longevity research from cardiologist Eric Topol

  • An Economist report on the biggest market, tech, and political trends this year

  • Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the works of Shakespeare

What study tools are included? Each notebook contains AI-powered mind maps as well as the podcast-like AI Overviews the platform is known for. If you’re having trouble wrapping your head around a challenging concept, you can even ask questions about it and get AI-generated responses.

This builds on last month’s update, which introduced the ability to make your notebook public. So far, around 140,000 public notebooks have been created and shared, unlocking new ways to explore topics you might not know much about.
