Deloitte’s State of AI 2026 report found that the share of companies with at least 40% of their AI projects in production is set to double within six months — but that same report flags an “AI skills gap” as the biggest barrier to integration. The models are ready, but the workforce is still catching up. To bridge that gap, companies are racing to hire one specific role: the forward deployed engineer (FDE).
Meet the FDE. A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who embeds with customers — learning their data, workflows, and constraints — then customizes or builds AI solutions to fit their needs. It's a hybrid role: part engineer, part consultant who helps bridge knowledge gaps between AI providers and customers.
The hiring spree. Salesforce has committed to hiring 1,000 FDEs, with companies like Palantir, Ramp, Cohere, and many others following suit. Anthropic and OpenAI have gone one step further by announcing billion-dollar joint ventures. The goal? Embed engineers inside client companies and build custom AI systems that stick.
By the numbers. The surge of FDE roles is part of a bigger pattern: Indeed's Hiring Lab found that software development job postings — especially those linked to AI — were up 14% annually in April, a pocket of growth in an otherwise challenging labor market.
