Coinbase’s layoffs reveal the type of employee companies are looking for

Widespread layoffs. In an open letter, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced he’s cutting headcount by 14%, citing two reasons: crypto’s down market and AI. But similar to Jack Dorsey’s letter in March, this wasn’t typical PR talk — he broke down his specific reasoning behind the changes.

Going lean. Coinbase is flattening its org chart, making every manager a contributor, and refocusing around AI-native talent who can drive outsized impact using AI and agents. The shift reflects a broader trend of prioritizing employees who can wear multiple hats.

Breaking the org chart. Zencoder recently praised a product manager who used AI to build and ship a new feature — initiative that’s not in the job description but saved a week’s worth of meetings. Vercel has gone further by hiring "design engineers" who can sketch and ship alone, collapsing two roles into one.

The new operating model. Coinbase, Zencoder, and Vercel are pointing in the same direction: smaller teams, fewer layers, and employees who leverage AI to punch above their weight. The age of the generalist has returned.
