The stalemate. Data center projects nationwide are facing fierce local opposition — and even approved ones could take years to come fully online. But three companies have an unconventional workaround: strapping mini data centers to people's homes.
The partnership. Energy startup Span has teamed up with homebuilder PulteGroup and Nvidia to test mini data centers powered by homes’ excess electricity. The goal? To ease strain on the grid with a nationwide web of home-installed units, which Span claims it can install 6X faster and 5X cheaper than a comparable 100-megawatt data center.
The tradeoff. The concept is in testing, but could create a win-win-win. Span taps unused capacity from homes to run AI compute, interested homeowners get a Span-paid discount on their utility bill, and communities avoid massive warehouses taking up valuable space.
Getting creative. Span announced the partnership in April, but the concept has recently gained more traction, with one concept video of Span’s units racking up 7M+ views.
