Welcome back, Superhuman. Two AI labs shipped new image models yesterday, including one that tops Nano Banana 2 and offers editing so precise its makers call the results "images you can touch." Plus, ChatGPT passed a crucial benchmark.

TODAY IN AI

Watch how Reve 2.0 generates “images you can touch.” Source: Reve.

1. Reve and Ideogram both ship new image models: Reve 2.0 rethinks image generation with a code-based layout that lets you fine-tune any detail of a generated image (see how it works). The model topped Nano Banana 2 on Arena rankings, making it the second-highest-ranked model available. Meanwhile, Ideogram 4.0 is now the world’s top-ranked open-weight image model.

2. ChatGPT hits 1 billion users faster than any app in history: OpenAI's chatbot crossed 1 billion monthly active app users in May, according to Sensor Tower. At roughly three years after launch, ChatGPT achieved this milestone faster than TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Google Maps.

3. Perplexity Computer is getting a local/cloud hybrid mode: The AI leader unveiled its upcoming "hybrid agentic inference" mode — a setup that splits a single task between a compact model running on your device and frontier models in the cloud. Perplexity believes the design will offer both tighter privacy and better token efficiency. See how it works.

We’ve unlocked WSJ articles for you: America’s data center build-out is falling way behind schedule, while the SpaceX IPO is set to make Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire.

Messy PDFs, broken tables, nested charts… Most AI workflows fall apart before the model even gets context.

FROM THE FRONTIER

AI’s thirst is sparking backlash — and tech leaders are working on solutions

Made with Midjourney

Running dry. Americans have turned sharply against data centers in recent months, with 70% now opposing one being built in their area. One main reason: Data centers are thirsty, guzzling roughly 300,000 gallons of water a day. Hyperscalers have heard the backlash — and some are racing to prove they can do better.

Closing the loop. During its Build 2026 conference, Microsoft emphasized that its newest data centers have roughly the same water usage as a single restaurant, thanks to their closed-loop systems. Older designs pumped water into cooling towers where it evaporated and needed to be replaced. In newer designs, water is added once during construction, then recirculates indefinitely.

Paying it back. Google has also prioritized water sustainability, laying out a five-part pledge yesterday. The main commitments: replenish more water than it uses at each site by 2030, report annual usage, and pursue alternatives to freshwater. Separately, four tech leaders have signed the Data Center Innovation Initiative, offering to bankroll startups working on cooling and energy tech.

Running blind. Conservation groups like the National Wildlife Federation call the pledges a good start — but warn they don't fix the core problem: there's still no standardized way to measure water use. Without that, transparency stays thin, and companies can't be held to their promises.
