1. New AI-powered devices emerge ahead of CES 2026: Spatial computing company Xreal announced an updated version of its AR glasses that convert 2D photos, videos, or games into a 3D experience. AI note-taking brand Plaud launched the NotePin S, a recording pin that lets you capture conversations, extract takeaways, and put them to use. Finally, voice AI startup Subtle unveiled Voicebuds, AI-powered earbuds that better capture your voice in loud rooms.

2. OpenAI ramps up audio AI ahead of first hardware device: The AI lab has unified its engineering, product, and research teams to develop a screenless, audio-first device expected in the next year or two. Developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, the product is rumored to be an AI-powered pen codenamed "Gumdrop" that will work alongside your computer and phone.

2. Alibaba's Qwen team releases open-source image model: Qwen has released Qwen-Image-2512, an updated image model that targets three enterprise pain points: realistic human rendering without the "AI look," accurate text embedding for slides and infographics, and finer natural textures. It ranked as the strongest open-source image model, rivaling Google Gemini 3 Pro.

FROM THE FRONTIER

OpenAI locked up 40% of the world's memory supply — and it’s creating a hidden tax on electronics

Made with Midjourney

OpenAI’s DRAM deal. In October, OpenAI secured preliminary agreements with Samsung and SK Hynix for 900,000 DRAM wafers per month — roughly 40% of global output. OpenAI needs this DRAM (the working memory inside most electronics) to power its data center initiatives, including the $500 billion Stargate project. The impact of this massive deal is already playing out.

Repricing the memory market. OpenAI’s deal has sparked a shortage that’s causing memory prices to skyrocket. A DDR5-5600 64GB memory kit that cost $180 last May. It’s now $710, a nearly 300% increase. Experts expect prices to keep rising in 2026, with Tom’s Guide calling the situation “RAMageddon.”

The ripple effect. Prices aren’t just rising for computer memory kits, but for everything that uses them. While tech giants like Apple or Samsung may absorb the rising costs in the short term, we’ll likely start to see even higher prices and scaled-back devices if this issue persists.

But memory giants aren't standing still. SK Hynix is investing $500 billion in four new fabs, with the first scheduled to come online in 2027. Samsung and Micron are also ramping capacity to meet the demand for AI. Relief won't arrive overnight, but the investment cycle has begun.

Nebius Token Factory just launched Post-training — the missing layer for teams building production-grade AI on open-source models.

You can now fine-tune frontier models like DeepSeek V3, GPT-OSS 20B & 120B, and Qwen3 Coder across multi-node GPU clusters with stability up to 131k context.

Models become deeply adapted to your domain, your tone, your structure, your workflows. Deployment is one click: dedicated endpoints, SLAs, and zero-retention privacy.

And for launch, fine-tuning GPT-OSS 20B & 120B (Full FT + LoRA FT) is free until Jan 9.

This is the shift from generic base models to custom production engines.
