When OpenAI showed off GPT-4o earlier this week, some experts thought its big competitor didn’t stand a chance in comparison. Now, Alphabet can confidently say: “You shouldn’t have counted us out so soon.”
On the opening day of its I/O conference, the company shoved practically a year’s worth of exciting AI announcements into a single keynote. Here are some of the biggest highlights.
You’ll soon be able to:
Generate summaries and replies in Gmail
Find information and compile timelines from your photos
Create charts and analyze data in Sheets
Get in-depth AI overviews from search queries
Integrate information from across apps (for example, you’ll be able to build a database with receipts gathered from your inbox)
Wow Factor: The tech giant’s Project Astra prototype might be the coolest thing we saw during the keynote. Similar to GPT-4o, it can take in information about your surroundings in real-time and help you with various tasks, from deciphering code, to spotting your missing glasses, to guessing which city you’re in. And unlike GPT-4o, it seems capable of processing video too.
Why it’s important: We’re a few steps closer to the first true AI agent — an assistant that can plan and make complicated decisions on your behalf. Online searches are already starting to move in that direction. For instance, if you ask the search engine for recommendations for nearby yoga studios, it will not only give you a curated list of options but also compile their ratings and other relevant info.
Multimedia: That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Alphabet also announced updates for its latest AI photo generator, Imagen 3, plus a new Sora video competitor known as Veo that has Donald Glover’s stamp of approval. Hip hop artist Wyclef Jean, meanwhile, counts himself as a fan of a newly upgraded Sandbox, built for music experimentation.

Generate multiple charts and analyses in one prompt with GPT-4o in ChatGPT
We’ve been playing around with OpenAI’s new GPT-4o model in ChatGPT this week and we’ve found a couple of handy new tricks we’ll be sharing with you this week.
To get multiple charts and analyses with in one go:
Pick the GPT-4o model from the drop down menu at the top of the screen
Attach a spreadsheet in the chat box (don’t forget to anonymize sensitive data)
Use the following prompt: Analyze this spreadsheet. Do deep technical and statistical analysis on it. Generate charts and visualizations.
You can right click on the charts to save the charts. And you can also instruct ChatGPT to compile the info in a PDF.

Gemini gets a speed and reasoning boost

AI’s biggest context window just got bigger. At its I/O Conference, Alphabet announced that Gemini’s 1 million token context window — basically, how much information the model can analyze at once — is expanding to 2 million tokens, for a limited number of developers, at least. That’s the equivalent of 1.4 million words or 22 hours of audio.
Customers who want to prioritize speed and efficiency can now access a new model called Gemini 1.5 Flash. If the standard version of Gemini is the brainiac of the family, Flash is like its efficient, nimble cousin. It works well for customers who want to prioritize speed, like a company designing a customer service chatbot.
Gems: Say you keep coming back to Gemini for help with the same task. A new feature called Gems lets you build your own custom GPT that’s specifically designed with that goal in mind. For instance, you can design a motivational AI running coach or a grammar guru who gives you writing advice.
AI Phones: Androids are getting even more integration with Gemini, including some exclusive features. For one, Circle to Search — the tool that lets you circle an object with your finger to find out more about it — is getting an upgrade. Now, you can not only translate text and identify products but also solve math equations. We also got a glimpse of a chatbot called Gemini Live that can allegedly hold natural conversations with you in real time.
