Party of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister wins national elections with the help of AI

Want to campaign for an upcoming election while you’re locked in jail? There’s an AI for that, apparently. In what has been described by experts as one of the least credible elections in the 76-year history of Pakistan — the world’s fifth most populous country with 230 million people — a surprise winner emerged in what has been widely called a shock result.

Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, has spent the duration of the country’s electoral campaign in jail over charges that publications like The Economist and The New York Times believe are designed to keep him out of politics. But the former cricketer-turned-politician has been campaigning from behind bars with speeches that are made with AI.

The AI-generated videos have generated millions of views on platforms like YouTube and X and have kept Khan’s voters motivated while he serves his time behind bars. However, his party’s use of technology hasn’t been limited to AI. While a crackdown ensued in the days leading up to the elections, the party’s candidates campaigned predominantly through social media platforms.

The result has been painted as a shock by many observers. The New York Times described the victory as “a surprise result that threw the country’s political system into chaos.“ As fears about AI’s role in shaping politics grow, the Pakistani elections provide a strong counter-argument for how the technology can be used as a force for good.

GOVERNANCE & POLICY

How big US companies are using AI to monitor employees

Forget about the government, your own employer could be reading your messages. According to a report published in CNBC, major US companies like Starbucks, Walmart and Delta are using AI to monitor employee messages.

The report claims that these companies and many others are using an AI-powered product called Aware that uses artificial intelligence to pull anonymized data from sources like Slack and Zoom to help understand employee sentiment.

Aware claims that its products identify undesirable behavior like bullying and harassment, and can flag individual users in extreme scenarios. We appreciate the good intentions, but those of us who have read Orwell can easily see how this one takes a wrong turn.
