1. Nothing launches Essential Apps, letting users build personalized apps with AI: Nothing launched the beta for Essential Apps, an AI-powered tool inside its Playground platform that lets users describe what they want in plain language — and get a new personalized app on their home screen. Early examples include workout schedulers that pull from your calendar and weather, or meeting briefing tools based on your email and messages. A public release is expected later this year. Learn more or watch the launch video here.

2. AI video startup Runway raises $315M at a $5.3B valuation, eyeing more capable world models: Runway announced $315M in fresh funding, nearly doubling its valuation to $5.3 billion. The AI startup plans to use the funds to build its next generation of world models, AI systems that construct internal representations of an environment to simulate and predict future events — with applications spanning robotics, self-driving, gaming, and medicine.

3. Claude Cowork is now available in Windows: Anthropic announced that its popular desktop agent, Cowork, is now available as a research preview in Windows. The Windows release matches the macOS version feature-for-feature — including file access, multi-step task execution, plugins, and MCP connectors. The tool is available to all paid Claude plans and lets users set persistent instructions that Claude follows across every session. See how it works here.

FROM THE FRONTIER

Elon Musk’s “data centers in space” plan is moving ahead quickly — but the economics & physics are still being questioned

Made with Midjourney

Data centers prepare for launch. Elon Musk’s “data centers in space” plan is moving forward more quickly than almost anyone expected. His pitch: solar panels produce about 5X more power in space than on the ground — with no clouds, no nighttime, no atmosphere blocking energy, and fewer regulatory hurdles. But there are a few significant gaps between the vision and reality.

Better doesn’t mean cheaper. In theory, solar-powered data centers might generate more energy in space, but that doesn’t mean they’re the most cost-efficient choice. The Center for European Policy Analysis says that launching a small-to-medium data center into space would require multiple launches and cost at least $200M — on top of the cost of the equipment itself. Once in space, plenty of new issues emerge.

Problems with space-based compute. A Northeastern professor points out that space is a vacuum that traps heat like a Thermos, causing uncooled chips to melt much faster than on Earth. Other unsolved problems include orbital debris knocking into data centers at 17,500 mph, no repair crew to address failures or conduct maintenance, constant radiation exposure, and satellites that only last about five years.

But Musk isn’t the only one looking up. While SpaceX’s ambitions have dominated the headlines, companies like Google (Project Suncatcher), Blue Origin, and Starcloud are also exploring orbital computing — lending credibility to the concept. The fact that the conversation is starting to shift from "if" to "when” represents a major turning point for the industry.
