Welcome back, Superhuman. World models (AI that understands everyday physics) could power the next wave of AI innovation — and Google is letting anyone try it out. The search giant just opened access to Project Genie, a tool that lets you build and explore interactive, infinite 3D worlds.

Today: Learn about Project Genie, how to turn any PDF into a whiteboard-style visual, and get the latest prompts and trending social posts.

1. DeepMind rolls out Project Genie, an AI world generator that creates explorable 3D environments from text prompts: The experimental prototype is powered by its Genie 3 world model (along with Nano Banana Pro and Gemini) that lets users create, explore, and remix interactive worlds. Unlike static 3D snapshots, the tool generates the path ahead in real time as you move — simulating physics and interactions on the fly. Now available for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Watch Project Genie in action or try it here.

2. Samsung and SK Hynix warn that the AI memory chip crunch will continue until 2027: The world's two leading memory chipmakers said they cannot keep up with fast-rising AI-driven demand for memory chips, with supply being pulled toward data centers and away from PCs and phones. The memory shortage is also fueling record profits. SK Hynix reported that its 2025 operating earnings roughly doubled to 47.2 trillion won ($33 billion). Learn more about the ongoing AI-induced memory shortage.

3. Apple acquires Israeli AI startup Q.ai for nearly $2 billion, its second-largest deal ever: Apple confirmed its acquisition of Q.ai, a startup that uses facial skin micro-movements to interpret whispered or non-verbal communication. The deal — reportedly valued at nearly $2 billion — is Apple's biggest acquisition since Beats in 2014. Patents show the tech working in headphones or glasses, potentially enabling non-verbal commands to Siri. The startup is led by CEO Aviad Maizels, who previously sold PrimeSense to Apple in 2013, whose technology became the foundation for Face ID.

Richard Socher and Bryan McCann are among the most-cited AI researchers in the world. They just released 35 predictions for 2026. Three that stand out:

  • The LLM revolution has been "mined out" and capital floods back to fundamental research

  • "Reward engineering" becomes a job; prompts can't handle what's coming next

  • Traditional coding will be gone by December; AI writes the code and humans manage it

FROM THE FRONTIER

Meet the AI research labs that are betting against ChatGPT

Made with Midjourney

The AI industry is splintering. A new wave of startups called "neolabs" are raising billions with no products, revenue, or plans to monetize anytime soon. That pitch would normally send investors running. But instead, they’re lining up, all hoping to find the next OpenAI before it becomes an OpenAI.

The neolab thesis: breakthroughs beat brute force. Many neolabs are betting that today's LLMs have reached their limits. They believe future breakthroughs will be unlocked by discovering new training methods — not by training on larger datasets. Ilya Sutskever, founder of Safe Superintelligence, says AI is returning to an "age of research."

Meet the neolabs. Flapping Airplanes, founded by 25-year-old Stanford PhD dropout Ben Spector, just raised $180M at a $1.5B valuation. There’s also Safe Superintelligence and Thinking Machines Lab, both of which were founded by former OpenAI employees and have been valued in the billions. There’s also AMI Labs, founded by Turing Award winner and Meta’s former Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun.

But the window may not stay open long. Neolabs require years of research before delivering breakthroughs — if they ever do. Venture capitalists, however, want to see financial returns. And quickly. If the AI hype cycle turns, these billion-dollar research bets could vanish as quickly as they’re appearing.
