Welcome back, Superhuman. It takes serious conviction to walk away from a job at a top AI lab to launch a startup. But that’s exactly what Gabriel Petersson did three months ago when he left OpenAI. His idea: an easier way for everyday people to use AI on the computer. He’s got steep competition, including his former employer.

Today: GMaps gets (even more) agentic, how to generate invoices with AI in seconds, and get the latest prompts and trending social posts.

TODAY IN AI

Learn about Energy, a new desktop agent from a former OpenAI employee. Source: Energy.

1. Former OpenAI researcher launches desktop AI agent: Energy is a downloadable desktop agent that helps tackle projects across your computer, whether that means digging through local files or navigating the internet. It’s also compatible with any LLM, so you’re not locked into any single vendor. The tool was built by Gabriel Petersson, a former researcher and engineer at OpenAI and Midjourney. See how it works.

2. Google Maps gets expanded abilities amid its biggest transformation in a decade: Ask Maps can now handle multi-step requests like ordering food from a restaurant along your route, researching events or hotels in the area, or providing real-time transit info. It can also pull context from your other connected Google apps to account for factors like flights or reservations (but only if you opt in).

3. Intel rolls out an enterprise agent router that blends local and cloud models: SuperClaw offers a hybrid approach for deploying agents: simple requests are routed to a local, on-device model, while more difficult queries go to more powerful cloud-based frontier models. The tool lands amid growing interest in model routing, as corporate America looks to curb unnecessary AI spending and retain more control over their AI infrastructure.

Yesterday’s most-clicked story: Four of Google’s top minds left to start their own firm, Discovery Loop, focused on automating and accelerating scientific discovery.

THE FRIDAY FOUR

In case your missed them, this week’s biggest stories

Made with Midjourney

OpenAI’s unreleased model solved 10 problems that hadn’t seen any progress in a decade

OpenAI's internal research model, Astra, solved 10 long-standing open problems spanning mathematics, quantum complexity, and theoretical computer science, laid out across a 249-page paper. None of the 10 problems had seen movement on their core results in more than a decade, and the compute bill to solve them came to roughly $2,000 in tokens.

Frontier models are starting to hack, lie, and manipulate during internal testing

Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta have all confirmed incidents of their models gaining unauthorized access to other systems during tests. In one instance, Anthropic's Claude Mythos wrote malicious code, invented fake online identities, and pressured a human maintainer into approving its changes. Organizations are starting to sound the alarm: JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has personally contacted leadership at 40 companies to flag the risk. Read more.

AI startup Hark launched its first product since landing $700M in funding in May

Hark Handoff is a new computer-use agent built to absorb the small tasks that can eat time out of your day: ordering DoorDash, shopping online, or scanning LinkedIn for your next hire. CEO Brett Adcock says the agent is the strongest computer-use model on the market today, according to independent testing. See how it works.

OpenAI fired back at Apple over its ongoing trade-secret lawsuit

Apple sued OpenAI last month, alleging the lab stole corporate trade secrets. OpenAI published its rebuttal this week, calling Apple’s claims "careless, aggressive, and oddly personal" and stating flatly it doesn't "have, nor want" Apple's secrets. It backed those statements up with internal emails and texts it says contradict Apple's version of events. Read OpenAI's full response.
