Welcome back, Superhuman. Losing your top employee isn’t ideal. But losing four at the same time? That’s almost unheard of — but it just happened to Google. And there was an interesting departure from OpenAI too. Researcher Naomi Bashkansky just left to start a new lab focused on…telepathy.
Today: AI startup Hark reveals its first product, how to turn your images into Canva designs, and get the latest prompts and trending social posts.
TODAY IN AI
1. Google’s Chief Scientist leaves to start his own firm: Jeff Dean — one of Google’s first employees — is departing to launch Discovery Loop with the goal of automating science’s experimentation loop to accelerate progress. He’ll be joined by other long-time execs Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will also step away into a role as chairman and Alphabet’s Chief Scientist. The timing isn’t ideal: Gemini has fallen out of the Top 10 models on Arena’s leaderboard.
2. Hark releases a computer use agent built for “tasks that eat up your day”: Hark Handoff is designed to take on everyday tasks like ordering food on DoorDash, shopping on Target, or recruiting talent on LinkedIn. CEO Brett Adcock claims it’s the best internet-use model available, according to independent verification. Handoff is the first product from Hark, which just raised $700M in May. Watch it in action here.
3. Black Forest Labs’ latest video model goes live: FLUX 3 Video is now generally available after its initial release roughly two weeks ago. The new model can generate clips in 1080p up to 20 seconds long that include native audio, dialogue, or sound effects — built on an understanding of the real world. It also comes with draft mode, letting you preview different ideas at a lower cost before rendering the entire video. Try FLUX 3 Video here.

Agents from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta are turning into hackers

Made with Midjourney
New AI models are growing increasingly erratic
Just one week ago, an OpenAI model broke containment and tried to hack Hugging Face. The lab already experienced two more incidents since then. And it’s not alone. Anthropic and Meta both confirmed their models have gained unauthorized access to other systems during tests. Some skeptics (and memes) insist these are just publicity stunts — but major organizations are starting to sound the alarm.
Engaging in “potentially harmful” activity directed at real people
The most notable incident involved Anthropic’s Claude Mythos. The UK’s AI Security Institute documented an instance of Mythos trying to insert malicious code into an open-source project. Not only did it write and upload the code, but it also created fake online identities so it could pressure the project's maintainer to approve it.
No real harm was done, and it’s worth noting that the agent’s safeguards had been disabled for the test. But it’s still one of the first times that an agent has manifested deception this clearly, without specific prompting.
Organizations are rallying
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is urging industry leaders to address the risks posed by AI, per Reuters. The outlet says he has personally contacted leadership at 40 critical infrastructure companies. When one of the world's most powerful bankers starts making personal phone calls, the risk is likely very real.

Meme of the day
📝 Power Pitch: Jeff Dean made his pitch deck for venture capitalists public. It’s probably the best one you’ll ever read in terms of the team’s sheer caliber, but the design is also hilariously no-frills (1M views).
🥩 Meat Proxy: A new corporate slur just dropped. The phrase comes from a passionate blog post called “Don’t Be a Meat Proxy” by developer Niklas Gruhn. It’s gone viral across several different posts.
🤦 ChatGPT Campaign: Residents of Suffolk thought they were having déjà vu during election season. Two different candidates leaned a bit too hard on ChatGPT, which resulted in virtually identical posters around town. Sometimes it still pays to hire a designer.
📲 Phone Finder: AI just solved losing your phone. One developer built a “hotter/colder” meter that leads his laptop to his cell phone using Bluetooth signal strength. No Find My Phone needed, just walk towards the beeping. Check it out here (10K bookmarks).
🤣 Anti Meditation: A viral video shows a man asking several LLMs for silence as he meditates, only for them to talk constantly with insanely distracting filler statements.
