Google makes major quantum breakthrough

ALSO: How to build AI-native mobile apps

Welcome back, Superhuman. The cultural backlash against AI is gathering momentum. A new open letter demanding a ban on the development of superintelligence has been signed by hundreds of major public figures like Steve Wozniak, Sir Richard Branson, Geoffrey Hinton, and others.

1. Google announces major quantum breakthrough: The search giant claims their Quantum Echoes algorithm, running on the Willow quantum chip, has achieved a 13,000-fold speed advantage over classical supercomputers. The achievement represents a significant step toward practical quantum computing applications in drug discovery and materials science. See more here.

2. Samsung takes on Apple with Galaxy XR: The $1,800 mixed-reality device is powered by Google’s Android XR OS and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip. Weighing 545g and featuring a 27-million-pixel micro-OLED display, Galaxy XR packs two pass-through and six tracking cameras, plus integration with Gemini for AI-powered navigation, search, and media. The headset is currently available in the US and Korea. See the headset in action here.

3. Amazon debuts AI-powered glasses for delivery drivers: The smart glasses are designed to assist delivery drivers with scanning packages, navigating routes, and spotting hazards hands-free. A small vest-mounted controller powers the glasses, which support prescription lenses and include an emergency button. Future versions aim to detect misdelivered packages, pets, and low-light hazards. Earlier reports also suggest that a model for consumers could arrive in late 2026 or early 2027.

FROM THE FRONTIER

New Goldman Sachs report says AI is partly behind a new era of “jobless growth”

Made with Midjourney

The US economy is growing, yet hiring is hitting the brakes. Goldman Sachs economists David Mericle and Pierfrancesco Mei say that the US is now entering an era of “jobless growth” — an economy where GDP climbs, but hiring doesn’t. In a recent analysis, they argue that most of that growth will come from AI-driven productivity rather than fresh hires.

Hiring data backs it up. New hirings are down 58% year-to-date, the lowest level since 2009, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell calls the labor market “low-hire, low-fire,” noting that young graduates and minorities struggle to find entry points.

AI isn’t the only culprit. The Yale Budget Lab and Brookings both found little macroeconomic evidence to suggest that generative AI is driving real displacement yet. Another study by the Society for Human Resource Management found that many companies are using automation to support human work rather than replace it outright.

Companies are betting billions on automation that rarely delivers — an MIT study found that AI deployments fail for 95% of firms, forcing rehiring or outsourcing. In some cases, AI appears less like transformative technology and more like a convenient cover for cutting payrolls and boosting profit margins.
