The biggest AI features coming to iOS

Earlier this year, OpenAI demoed a conversation between developers and a chatbot that seemed so life-like that some compared it to a sci-fi movie. Now, after months of speculation, Apple is here with its own long-awaited AI announcement.

We’re covering Siri’s AI upgrades below. But first, here’s a rundown of the new “Apple Intelligence” features coming to iOS in the next few months.

Images:

  • Create custom, AI-generated “genmojis” and illustrations in seconds, including ones that feature yourself or your friends

  • With the new image wand, transform rough sketches into detailed images or generate custom images based on your text

  • Clean up and enhance photos automatically and find specific photos by describing them in plain language

Text:

  • Proofread emails, summarize key points, and generate different ways of writing your emails, notes, and keynotes to find the option that works best for you

  • Transcribe meetings into the Notes app, then ask for summaries and other information about your call

  • With the iPad’s new smart script feature, clean up your handwriting in real-time or copy text from a message or webpage into your own handwriting

Privacy:

  • Low-level AI tasks will take place directly on your device, while servers will help with more intensive AI tasks

  • Apple says that your device will be able to understand things about your personal life — like which one of your contacts is your daughter, where her soccer game is, and how long it will take to get there

  • But it insists this information is encrypted and can’t be accessed by anyone else — not even the company itself

AI & INNOVATION

Siri is back better than ever with AI

Source: Apple

Siri was a marvel when it hit the market more than a decade ago, becoming one of the first virtual assistants we could access through our smartphones. But some users say they’ve stopped using it, especially as chatbots like ChatGPT take on more complex tasks for us. Now, Apple is poised to even the odds by infusing Siri with its own AI features.

Personal Touch: Apple wants to set Siri apart by having it focus on your personal needs. It can connect the dots between apps and understand how different parts of your life fit together. For example, if you need to fill out a form with your driver’s license info, Siri will be able to retrieve a picture of your license from the Photos app, spot your ID number, and automatically copy it into the form.

Siri’s new colleague: For problems that Siri can’t solve on its own, it will ask OpenAI’s ChatGPT for help. You’ll also be able to ask for information about a particular photo or document without needing to navigate to the ChatGPT app.

Helping Hand: You no longer need to dig through menus in order to find a specific setting or preference. Instead, you can tell Siri what you want to do using natural language, and it will send you directly to the setting you’re looking for.

Another nice feature: If you’re trying to focus on a task without interruption, you can ask iOS to filter out less pressing notifications and only show you the ones that are most important to you. This feature and many more will gradually roll out across Apple’s devices starting this summer and fall.

  • Citation Needed: The CEO of AI-powered search engine Perplexity admitted the platform’s new shareable report generator still has some “rough edges” after journalists complained it was copying their work without proper attribution.

  • Privacy Patch: Microsoft is implementing double-encryption and an opt-in feature to its new AI-powered Recall tool — which can remember your previous actions online — after experts warned it could be easily breached.

  • Beyond Mono: Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark reportedly made the first phone call with 3D audio, a technology that makes it sound as though you’re in the same room with another caller.

😄 One Fun Thing: The University of Washington is developing a pair of AI-powered headphones that let you focus in on a person’s voice while blocking out all other noises in your periphery.

🧠 Brain Food: Here’s a riddle: If Alice has three sisters and one brother, how many sisters does Alice’s brother have? The answer is four — Alice, plus her three sisters. But a recent study found that most AI models couldn’t answer this problem — only GPT-4o earned a passing grade — showing AI still struggles with solving logic puzzles.
