Why is everyone suddenly talking about data centers in space?

Two key ingredients. Data centers require two things in massive quantities: power and cooling. In 2024, U.S. facilities consumed over 4% of the nation's electricity and guzzled 17 billion gallons of water to keep servers from overheating. With AI driving compute demands higher, both numbers are projected to more than double by 2030.

The traditional model is hitting a wall. Local power grids are already straining under AI's appetite for electricity, with some regions even blocking new facilities. Water supplies are finite, real estate is limited, and as energy demand skyrockets, so do costs and carbon emissions.

Space kills two birds with one stone. A solar-powered data center in orbit could —with the right timing — stay in the sun 24/7. With no atmosphere or clouds in the way, it would generate up to 8 times more power than a solar panel on Earth. Meanwhile, excess heat and emissions would simply radiate right out into the cold, endless vacuum of space.

The race to orbit has already started. Starcloud launched a satellite with an Nvidia H100 GPU in November and recently trained the first LLM in space. And, with Blue Origin, Starlink, and Google also making strides, the real question probably isn’t whether data centers will move to space — but which company gets there first.
