Meta releases prompt engineering guide to help beginners and pros prompt like experts

Open Sesame. Prompts are the AI-equivalent of the famous phrase Aladdin utters to open the cave of treasures. The right framing or wording can help double the quality of responses you get from ChatGPT, according to some recent research.

And Meta is conveniently at hand to help us whisper the sweet spells that will entice these chatbots to give us the answers we want. The company behind Facebook and Instagram announced a new prompt engineering guide yesterday for professionals and enthusiasts alike to get their desired output from LLMs.

Here are some of the best techniques Meta shared in the guide to help you level up your prompting game at work and beyond:

  • Stylize: Give detailed, specific instructions like “explain this to me like I’m a beginner.“

  • Format: Ask for answers in your desired text and file format, like bullet points or spreadsheets.

  • Restrict: Enforce restrictions such as word limits or timeframes to get the answer you’re looking for.

  • Roles: Assign a role such as “you are a marketer writing copy for an ad“ to get better results.

  • Chain-of-Thought: For complex prompts, adding instructions such as “take your time“ or “think through it step by step“ can also increase performance.

You can find the full prompt engineering guide from Meta here.

Apple pushing aggressively to bring AI features to iPhone, claims report

While other tech giants like Microsoft and Meta have been parading their AI prowess up and down the virtual streets of the internet, Apple’s silence on generative AI has not gone unnoticed in Silicon Valley. But a new report implies that developments behind the scenes at Apple could shake things up big time in the near future.

A Financial Times report published yesterday shows how Apple is pushing hard on multiple fronts to bring AI to the iPhone:

  • Apple is focused on solving the technological problem of running AI through mobile devices, which will allow AI apps to run on the device instead of the cloud.

  • Recently unveiled chips also show how Apple is making progress in executing heavy AI workloads on devices.

  • The iPhone maker has also acquired 21 AI startups since 2017, according to PitchBook.

  • The company is also ramping up its hiring efforts to acquire the best AI engineering talent.

With Samsung’s latest release of its high-end “Galaxy AI” phones, the tech industry waits with bated breath for Apple’s next move.

CHART

I spy with my little AI — dark patterns in the fishing industry

A recent study, led by Global Fishing Watch, found that nearly 75% of the world's industrial fishing vessels aren’t disclosed in public tracking systems. Using satellite data and AI, scientists were able to track where these so-called “dark fleets” were, and more importantly, what they were doing there. (Hint: probably fishing illegally.)

Fernando Paolo, Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Global Fishing Watch, said that the combination of satellite data and AI helped them map “undisclosed industrial activity at sea on a scale never done before.” This could help shed light on what global industrial fishing actually looks like.
