1. OpenAI’s new Applications CEO has big plans: Instacart CEO Fidji Simo is headed to OpenAI next month to lead product development, overseeing around a third of the company. In a memo to staff, Simo pointed out how AI is already revolutionizing medicine, education, and work — and teased what OpenAI’s cooking up next: Tools that can provide coaching and emotional support and even help with everyday drudgery, like the 20 hours US households spend on chores and errands per week.

2. DeepMind’s experimental model earns IMO gold: Days after OpenAI announced it had earned the highest distinction on the International Mathematical Olympiad (a math world championship for high school students), DeepMind revealed it too had earned a gold medal. It nailed five out of six of the problems perfectly using an enhanced version of Gemini Deep Think. Aside from the controversy over whether OpenAI leaked the news too early, both companies’ impressive results suggest there’s no clear frontrunner in the AGI race.

3. Meta ups the ante, but with mixed results: As it tries to attract the best in the business for its new superintelligence lab, Meta has reportedly offered four-year compensation packages worth $300M to at least 10 elite OpenAI researchers. The ChatGPT-maker’s chief research officer reportedly turned down a $1B offer earlier this year. Anthropic co-founder Benjamin Mann said Meta’s “mega offers” mostly hadn’t worked on his colleagues either because they valued their company’s mission over money.

New model promises to tweak your videos in real time

It’s a familiar cycle: You type in your prompt, hit generate, cross your fingers — then do it all over again, hoping this time it works. A startup called Decart wants to make the process more seamless (and fun) by letting you transform livestreams in real-time instead of having to edit them afterwards.

Later this week, it’s releasing what it calls “the first ever World Transformation Model,” a platform called Mirage that can reshape any video or game. For now, a demo lets you use a webcam to transform yourself and your surroundings with presets like “Versailles Palace,” “anime,” and “yarn world.” Or you can submit your own idea — say, “cubist painting” or “black-and-white.” Here’s a link to try it for yourself.

How does it work? Similar to Decart’s Oasis experiment, which can generate a digital world that changes as you move through it, Mirage relies on autoregression, meaning it generates each subsequent frame based on the one that came before it. That’s a far more efficient process than conventional, diffusion-based approaches.

You can see where this is going: Using the same underlying technology, you could one day watch a soccer game as if it were happening in a futuristic cyberpunk world. Or you could switch up the setting of your favorite video game, giving it an underwater or Western theme (there’s clearly a market for this kind of thing). Mirage and similar models could also have a major influence on social media, becoming a part of our interactions on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
